VOLUMES GIFT OF U.S. Collection in Library Prepar ed on Early Oregon By Naval Party NATURAL LIFE SHOWN Works Are Result of Explor ations Under Command . of Captain Wilkes "Presented by tae congress of the United States to the territory of Oregon," in the engraved plate dedicating a wonderful series of books now in tho state library in halem. They are the huge full sheet volumes of engravings de scriptive of the natural history researches made by tne exploring party under command of Captain Charles Wilkes. United States' navy, who visited " the Pacific northwest and many of the Pacific Ocean islands, in the. years 1828 to 1942 The books were not finished up immediately. The data was taken east, put into the hands of skilled scientists, and the volumes f.'n ished up some years later. Some indeed, were not issued until aftei Oregon became a state. The dedi cation plate of these later volume: savs "state" instead of "territory of Oregon. Kngrnvings Perfect The plate paper cn which th engravings are printed, is almost as heavy as board. The eouuep engravings are as perfect as any thing that could be produced to rtsv an printing is beyond criticism, though it was done ?f years ago. The books are large about 18x24 inches in sUe. and ho iieu juu m umam lucm There Is a volume on Herpetol ogy snakes, lizards, toads, frogs from all over the Pacific. The rattlesnake looks natural enough t.i sung a man to death. One can almost hear them rattle in warn- The little lizards seem as it they have just paused for one iook, and one can almost see their legs twinkle as they scuttle off again. Should a fly . light on one of these toad plates, the beholder would certainly bo disappointed. If the toad didn't shoot out a long sticky tongue and take Mr. Fly homo for dinner. A whole ten thousand dollar book full of snakes and toads and lizards, cold-skinned, scaly crca lures that give nervous people the willies. A great western engineer who makes natural history his di version, said that the one thing he liked hest in ItoosetelUs natural history writrngs from' South Am erica and Africa was the fact that he devoted such care to writing of the snakes that Tie found. If this engineer could br.t see this herpe tological report put out by Uncle Sam, he'd love dear old uncle to death. Ilotuny Volume Included ; One volume treats of botany, and was prepared from the expe dition's notes and flower- collec tions, by Professor Ana '..Cray, per- m. i uicn.nii Ana uray, per- n the greatest botanist of all time. He was not of the exDedi- t!on. but took the material and put it into shape for publicat'on. Professor Bruce Hqrsfall, of Port land, who visited Salem some weeks ago with his great collec tion of flower and bird pictures for the Salem' Arts league expo sition, did a similar work for some Princeton college explorers In South America, the work being completed 10 years after the ex pedition returned home. Professor Ilorsfall spent hours, almost days, in going ovef these Wilkes expe dition plates, and admiring them as only an appreciative artist can do. - . One volume treats of molluscs, shells from all over the Pacific. No natural history fact was too -mall for these early investigators to note. They were certainly ex haustive- searchers after facts. , Thousands of shells are illustrat ed. many in tints or colors. Only 100 sets of these plates were printed; one for each .state, one for each "friendly power." one for the naval lyceum of Brook lyn, one for the library of congress and two each for Great Britain and France.
