A. mceta at the church ter. the wife of Samuel R. Thurs ton, Oregon's first representative to congress. Her mother, Mary A. Gray, caiae west in 1851 as one of five missionary teachers sent to the Oregon territory by ihe na tional board of popular education. Hero she met the young pioneer, Ilenjamin F. McLench. and tbey were married in 152. In nuch a home the higher things of lifi? received due atten tion, and Mrs-. Caldwell began her education at home, completing her scholastic work at Willamette university. On July 11. lsfsx. at her childhood home she was united in marriage to Frank P. Caldw-11, a native of Maine. Their first place of residence was adjoin in.? her fathfr's farm in Polk county. Their children were Marry K. Caldwell, who survives them, and Kstella M., who died at the age of X years. Her husband was called awaj by death 14 yeare ago this month. Surviving Mrs. Caldwell are her onlyson, Harry F., her sister. Mrs. Mary K. Watson, both the preceding of Salem, and her bro ther Frank G. McLench, who still lives on the old family farm m Polk county. There, are also nephews and cousins. In 1903, becausa of health con ditions, the Caldwell family moved to flrant county, where the hus band died. In 1903 Mrs. Caldwell and her son returned to make their home in Salem. Most of thh time Kince then they and her sis ter and family have resided to gether, whert she did her part faithfully and cheerfully. At the atrr- of 18 Mrs. Caldwell joined the Baptist church and was a faithful member until her death. May 16, 1921. He first came to Oregon In 1875 but -was soon called home bv the sickness of his father. lit 1883 he returned to claim In mar riage Miss Mary E. McLench. a native daughter of Oregon. Later he decided to make his home here, and to this home were oorn one daughter, Mary Sophia, who died at the age of 11 years, and two sons. George M., now of Salem, and Lester C. living in Cleve land. O.. also his deceased sister's daughter who came to be one ot her uncle's family over 20 years ago. Aside from his immediate family two brothers survive him. Hiram, a O. A. Jl. veteran of Peoria. III., and Frederick M.. i younger brother in Roseville, 111. j Augustus Watson was a patriot-1 i ic citizen, a descendant of Revolu tionary ancestry. His own fath er was in too frail health to do service in the rebellion but his two oldest sons were on "duty through the war. Meantime th" youngster Augustus did valiant work helping his father on the farm. It was his life long regret that he was too young and too old to serve his country in her times of need, but ho was thank ful that his two sons represented him in the World war. He was loyal not only to his country but to the right and Tor all that stood for the upbuilding of humanity. He stood for tem perance in all things and for the Christian Sabhath observance. In his early manhood he united with the Kaptist church and wan ever found on the right side of moral and reltgh us i-uestioas. Somo of his lart written words to hix family were thee: "The Holy Bible Is Ww only true guide to a right life; and he who obeys its teachings is sure of the reward." Mrs. Kmitia . Whit more Mrs. Kmma C. Whitmore died at the home of hr daughter. Mrs. Herltert Haid. hV Court street. Salem. Ore.'. May :J0. VJ2, at the age of "2 years. She wa the widow of the late J. C. Whitmore who died about 14 years ago. She is .survived by the following children; Mrs. Clara Ferguson of Shungnack, Alaska; William Whitmore of Hutte, Mont.. Mrs Herbert Hald of Sa lem, and I. I). Whitmore of Los Angeles.
