Mr HEAH1 ID Mf HUSBAND Adele Garrlaoo'a New ritase Of REVELATIONS OF A WIFE CHAPTER 54 WHY MADGE WAS FRIGHT ENED AT THE SITUATION. Kenneth Stockbridge's tired face brightetied with a smile as he caught s'ght of our party. Hut beyond the smile and and a bow he made no effort to speak to u. even though the table to which the waiter had escorted his par ty was very near to our own. Of course we all realized at once the reason for his constraint It was evident in his wife's atti tude. She included us all in a curt, unsmiling nou, then dropped frownlngly Into a scat, paying no attention whatever to the rest ot her party, but staring moodily at her plate. She was In one of her worst moods. One could see it not only in her manner, but in the tight ened lips and deepened pallor ot her husband, and the worried looks o' the elderly man and wo man, who, together with two younger women near "Milly Stock bridge's own age, made up the group at their laole. "Little Sweet'e's papa and ma ma and fond s'sters are with us tonight " Bess Dean murmuered audaciously, but after my first start of dismay I realized that the people at the other table coula not possibly have heard her. She Las the trick of speaking in an almost inaudible tone, yet manag ing to make herself comprehend ed by the person ahe is address ing. Bess Dean Observes. I was relieved, however, when in another minute the orchestra struck, up a highly "syncopated se lection, wh'ch made it possio'.e for one's next neighbor to shout the most dangerous secrets with out the slightest chance of haw ing them overheard "You know, I think there's go ing to be fireworks," Bess Dean went on guilelessly pretending to be absorbed In buttering a roil. There was the naive enjoyment of a child at a circus in her voice and manner, and t realized that while she mights have generous sensible moments in which she would give any aid in her power to her harassed principal, yet her general attitude toward the dbmestic traffedy of Kenneth and t Millr Stoehbr dge wa9 that ot a spectator who did not much caro v ru-ther she were amused1 or shocked so long as the drama re mained Interesting. I was not certain how much she knew or guessed concerning Mil ly Stockbridge's Insane and ab surd Jealousy o' me, which had so nearlv proved a tragedy upon the night of the reception to Dicky at the principal home. Nor did I care particularly ex cept for my fear that through some inadvertent look or gesture f Dicky m'ght suspect the troth. He was bent toward Miss Dean as she spoke, and I saw a loo!: of surpise flash into his face. A Cruel Complaint. "Fireworks?" be repeated won deringly. "Pine trie thundercloud at your right!" Miss .Dean went on mi3 ch evously. "Kenneth's been do ing something he hadn't orter. Perhaps he didn't give the poo dle the proper amount of calories or whatever you call. em in his evening meal At any rate, the missus is on the warpath, and it things don t go Just her way Just you get ready to dodge the silver! She'll start heaving 'em at Kennv, but she also has a wo man's aim, and you're about the right distance for an innocent bystander." She was dimpling adorably as she talked, and Dicky laughed heartily at what he evidently ac cepted as audacious nonsense. But I took advantage of his ab sorption to murmur a worried question in the ear of Alice Hol combe on the other side of me. "Do you think we ought to get out of here?" "We can't " he responded promptly, "without attracting at tention both from Milly and the public, which we don't want. You see. we've already ordered, and the waiter will be here in a m'n ute or twe with our food. No there's' nothing to do but to sit tight. There's one consolation, her people are all with her. Witn them all around her they can re press her if she goes beyond b,oundr.. Just listen to her. That' an old trick of her. to worry the life out of her husband and her relatives until they take her to some place of this kind she loves gayety of any sort and then proceed to let loose all the meanness that's in her." From the other table came the confirmation of her words. Milly Stockbridge's voice was raised shrilly. "For heaven's sake. Ken. don'' slouch like that In your chair, i rhould think you could manage to s t no straight even if you can t stand that way. You just do t on purpose to annoy me.' To be continued) Tl'RXER NOTES.
