According to President Carl
('refts Ioney. slightly In excess of
1H) women have already submit
ted applications for rooms in new
Lausanne hall. This, said Mr.
Doney. indicates that the housiujr
problem will be a serious one to
contend with this fall. However.
it is his opinion that roonls will
be obtained for all students.
The new Lausanne hall will not
be completed at the opening of
college. Many of the women will
be quartered in the new women's
dormitory under temporary in
conveniences. The first floor is
now complete for habitation, but
additional work needs to be done
on the second and third floors.
The plumbing is jiot yet complet
ed. Some of the girls may be
temporarily quartered in private
homes.
Waller hall, which has been in
a process of renovation during the
past summer, will .be , completed
for occupation and nse about a
week or two after the opening of
the fall term. The chapel audi
toriuni which is situated in Wal
ler hall will be ready for service
Boon alter the opening of the uni
versity. The seats, which were
ordered from an eastern firm.
will not be installed for several
weeks, due to the inability of the
manufacturers to furnish them
Dr. Doney received a commnnica
tiort from the manufacturers yes
terday, saying, the new seats
would be shipped within 40 days
In the meantime the old seats are
to be installed In the auditorium.

sterian society was founded 13
years ago, while the Philodorian
literary society is the oldest oa

MAKES BEST
FISH JUDGE
Misses Weight of Big Sal
mon at Fitts Market by
Only Half Pound
Apparently human eyes deceive
for out of 300 Salemites who par
tu iraied in . the salmon weight
guessing contest held yesterday
afternoon at the Pitts market on
Court street, only a third of tha
number was able to guess with
in 20 pounds of the actual weigh
Many visited the shop, made a
guess, and are now on record as
being poor judges of fish. Prank
M. Mapes won.
Two large salmon, one from
Yaquina bay and one from Ne
halem hay. were received Thurs
day from a fishing company at
Newport by the Fitts market. The
salmon were among the largest
tver purchased here. W. S. Fitts
conceived the idea that a weight-
nesting content would furnish
good sport for his patrons. Ac
cordingly he placarded his shop
window announcing the conditions
of the weight guessing contest.
No ono was barred. All one
had to do was write his name oh
the weigntfguessing ttook and op
posite his name indicate his guesn.
For th? one making the nearest
guess Mr Fitts offered a large
portion ot the salmon. Hy 3
o'clok yesterday' afternoon 200
Salemites had hazarded guesses ti
ranging between IS? pounds and
29 Vs pounds. The salmon tipped
the beam at It pounds hea
weighed at the ose oi the eon
test, at 3 o'clock yesterday arter
nooa. Mr. Ma pes. the winner,
made a guess of 40 H pounds.
