THE EAB THAT WALKS LIKE A HYENA hers to the retailers at 21 cents. The retailers are allowed 2 eents a pound only. They were allowed 2 cents when the price was 10 cents a pound. In the matter of percent age of profit on dollars invested, the retailers are making lea than half as much as they were on the cheaper sugar. The. price of sugar ought to be cut in two again, by the refin ers. Everything above 6 cents a pound to them Is robbery highway robbery; going "now by the polite same of profiteering. There is' no good sense in allowing the refineries to make more than a reasonable profit on their Investments; with ample provision for depreciation and the Improvement of their machinery and plants. ; The Turks who don't like the peace terms say tbey wiU fight to the bitter end. The bitter end has been a favorite play In Turkey for a great many years. - The equal suffragists say they have It all f lied for the Tennessee legislature to adopt the equal suf frage amendment. In that case they will no longer spell the name of that state's capital city "Gnash vllle." .. - The civilized world will hare reason to thank God for Great Britain if that country will follow up s and make thorough her threat to declare war upon Russia, if her soviet assassins refuse to halt their hordes of barbarians that are threatening to overrun Poland.' . - V;- .-v 4- The Statesman of yesterday morning carried exclusively the in formation that such a threat was made yesterday- London time. " Last night's cables say the British North Sea fleet is on its way to blockade Kussian ports. - s ; The cables of last night also say the arch assassins of the soviet declare that an order to their Aroops (who are merely hired assassins) to stop short of Warsaw would not be obeyed, because they (the troops) have been promised the chance .to loot that unfortunate city. "Promised, no doubt, by Lenin e and his gang of arch assassins. These arch fiends have built a Frankenstein, grown beyond con trol on its daily feasts of human blood, till the monster threatens to run amuck and overwhelm European civilization.- V - The monster of Bolshevism must so run amuck to live. Forced back to its own lairs, it will soon die As the world! is at present organized; Great Britain is the only power capable of halting the course of the monster of armed Bol shevismgrown frenzied with blood lust, and demanding more loot and blood and rape in order to live. ," , . What a pity that the United States, which should be the leader of civilization and progress, must look on in apathetic and doddering inaninity and helplessness, while civilization itself is threatened with the red ruin of anarchy. Salem Y. M. C. A. workers were grieved on "Wednesday" after noon when news of the death of Albert M. Grilley one of the best known and best loved "Y" workers in Oregon, reached this city. JEajor Dalrymple. the federal booxe fighter who put down the rum rebellion In northern Michigan, de clares that the only way to effect ively enforce the prohibition amend ment Is to revoke all licenses of druggists and others and not to per mit a drop of liquor for medicinal, sacramental or other purposes to be distributed except by the govern ment.; The government roust own or control the stocks and have full re sponsibility for the distribution. The reason for this, according to Major Dalrymple, lies in the fact that the sentiment in many com munities is opposed to prohibition and In almost every city the police are inclined to help rather than hin der the bootlegging industry. It is a fact that In many places the most successful, bootleggers are recruited from the police force. When a large proportion of a community esteems it a Joy and privilege to fracture the prohibition amendment its stern enforcement Is mighty difficult. To make no legal distribution of liquor possible save, through the govern ment might help. - Again, who is the profiteer? That's easy. It is the other fellow. Pancho Villa has at last surren dered. Here is a hunch for the Dem ocrats. Exchange. Turkey has signed, all right. But she will play the outfield In the League of Nations. '. Of course. If Bob La Follette had lived In Ohio he might have accept ed that fifth party nomination. r And Governor Coolldge did not have a word In his speech of accept ance as to how he managed to get a house for $25 a month. ,-, ; (England and France have devel oped a plan by which they will de velop the rich oil fields of Europe us two and no more. ,! Now the manufacturers of cloth ing are laying off help. It is a part or the thake-down that will be good lor tot country. The peak of high prices has passed; but there is a lot of necessary readjustment yet. to put business on a basis of solidity and health. - The man who buys government bonds now that will yield him C per cent Interest Is a mighty sensible purchaser. . And it can be done. "Farmer Dunn." the famous fore caster, says Harding is sure to win Ever so often these guessers hit ft. But Dunn U taking no chances this year. Everybody is "hep." Some sheep on every farm In the Salem district is a slogan that oucht to be followed till It comes 100 per cent true. . And preferably medium wooled sheep. Sugar is down some more; "at the refinery. It is still 25 cents a oound in Salem, at retail. It will be 23 cents for the new stock coming from the refinery In a week or ten dajs. That is. While It Is natural to view any statement made by a Prussian Junk er with suspicion, there is a ring of sincerity In the warning against Bol shevism that General Ludendorff haa ottered to stir 'into action not only his own nation, but all people who value the future of civiliza tion.,'7-, No doubt General Ludendorff hares the bitter . animosity of all the defeated German militarists against the allies and Is ready for any desperate coup by. which to avenge that defeat.. But he warns his people against placing themselves ia rassalage to the Russian Soviets in the vain expectation of thus re establishing German supremacy In Europe. Bitter as It may be to the proud Prussian, he is forced to admit that the world'a hopes are now 'bound up in the successes of the once de spised bourgeoisie, and between the proletariat and the shop keeper he finds safety only In the latter. Gen eral Ludendorff has no desire to see Pan-Cermanla rise again from earth merely as a tail to the Bolshevist kite. Therefore, he haa been at pains to point out to the bourgeoisie their chief source of weakness In their fight with the resolute anarchist dic tators who are exploiting the Slav millions In the most desperate en terprise that the brain of a tyrant ever was guilty of conceiving. Thus he tays very pertinently: "Let no 6ne believe It (Bolshe vism) win come to stand without en veloping Italy. France and England. "No. Not even the seven seas can stop It. "Then It will be too late and civi lization will crumble. "And the cause will be the ob tvscness of governments and the lethargy of the borgeolsie. as the Utter likes to stay quietly at home on days of decisive events." And the pity of it is that America's loyal co-operation with the other democratic nations could have un-Frankenstelned the Bolshevist infant that during the last three years has been developing with the monstrous 'precocity of a modern Prometheus. , (With the eye of a practiced gen eral. Ludendorff sees the Bolshevist campaign aa designed by the Rus sian dictator. Thus be says: ''Bolshevism Is a monster that must advance to exIsL It was easy to foresee that the Bolshevist army would attack toward the middle of JUy and defeat the Poles. "We must now figure on a Bol shevist advance In Poland toward Berlin and Prague. "The moment will come when Bol shevist armies will menace Germany and Cxecho- Slovakia. '"Lenine has also ' advanced his lines to the frontiers of China. Af ghnlstan and India and Is now pre paring to continue his progress. Then, in spite of his animosity to ward Britain, the general makes this succinct statement: Their (Bolshe vist) propaganda ia stirring the masses of . India. Through Asia Minor Into Persia and Arabia it moves In the anti-Christian Pan I&lamic spirit. A conflict between the Bolshevists and England Is not the only, problem. The problem Is a conflict between clvllixation and barbarism." " At such a crisis In world affairs anyone who attempts to sow antagon isms between the natlonr, on whose joint offices the future of this clvlli xation depends. Is playing Into the hands of the barbarians. This much we in America may at least learn from the warning of our late enemy. General Ludendorff has supplied snother insistent reason for our tak ing our place in the League of Na tions, and a League .that shall be something more than a slumberous Hague tribunal not because it we don't It will -break the heart of the world. but because If we do It will break the back of Bolshevism If the - United tates senate had promptly ratified ithe peace treaty, with the League of Nations cove nant, without reservations, or with any one of the "fifty-seven varieties of reservations (and It would' have Leen as good one way as any other way mentioned). Governor Cool ldge declared further that there were enemies at work to Impair those rights. THE NEW LIFE. lEaeh of Villa's soldiers receives a year's pay, which Is expected to give him a new start In life. What a. year'a pay consists of is not here known, but after the bandit has spent It In riotous living, will he not be demanding a fresh distribution or again taking to the highway? What sort or security csn a Villa follower give that he will behave, have, anyhow? What would his note be worth at the bank, even with Pancho as an indorser? OUT OK THE DEEP.
