Few garden plants have been known to and cultivated by man longer than the cucumber. De Candolle has proved that this plant has been in cultivation between three and four thousand years. It is not strange in view of this fact that it has become a standard garden! vegetable, and that numerous devices have been resorted to to bring it under cultivation tinder climatic conditions where it would not normally thrive and at a time of year when it could not be grown in the open. - ' r As a result of these attempts to supply the table of man with this delicacy at all seasons and in varying climates, two types of .cucum bers which are very distinct have been produced One the English or forcing type of cucumber has been developed and is grown almost exclusively under glass. The short type of fruit, which is commonly caiieu ine American type, is extensively grown in tne Held lor pick ling purposes and for slicing fruits. In parts of Turkey cucumbers supply a large part of the food of the people There they are cooked in various ways, and eaten as a salad, and pickled and prepared in manners little known in this country.--- ------ I' !- .-.-m-.-'- v In the United States cucumbers are cooked in many homes, like egg plants or summer squash, and in other ways. On the Salem Slo gan pages of The Statesman of this morning, there is copied what the United States Department of Agriculture has to say in a popular bulletin on the cooking of cucumbers. . 1 For a long time Gideon Stolz of Salem bought a great many bushels of cucumbers annually and pickjed them. He has been obliged the fast two or threeyears to discontinue this, as well as the putting up of saner kraut, on account of the lack of supply. a And this lack has been caused by the high rates of farm labor. 5 : L There are, however, a number of successful producers of cucumbers tinder glass in this section, such as Miss II. Field of Salem, Scheurer ana btonenouse or Aurora, J?Y U. Chase of Eugene and others. And there are a number of successful irrowers of the field nrodne in Clackamas and Washington and Mutionmah counties, shipping to four pickle factories in Portland. This industry is of sufficient importance to warrant an invitation to men from other points who understand cucumber growing to come m:re mm ueip uuuu up a great inaustry. - ! i r This is a splendid cucumber country. There is none better. ; Year in and year out; for the men who understand it, there is no mure rename luuusiry. i ! l It is a branch that should not be neelected. ! ! It must be understood that this branch of the cucumber industry requires special knowledge, painstaking work, great care una considerable capital. The Salem Slogan pages of The Statesman of next Thnrsulav veil attempt to show that swine breeding is one of the fifty-two most important basic industries of the Salem district that this is a good hog country; and the following week we hope to show in a "City Beautiful" edition that Salem is the most beautiful city in the United o(.ien, or me worm, ana ought to be more so. Sir Oliver Lodge, who claims privi leged communication with the spirit ual world, assures ua that the world will exist for another million years. That should give the suffragists a good innings and time to undo most of the ruthless atrocities of a man- governed world. It also offers Ireland a little leis ure In which to think np more profi table tactics. And bow Jolly for Mexico they can have a million more revolutions by that time. Wonder how much sugar and gas oline will cost? LOAN IS SOUGHT TO SAVE NATION Roumania Sees Need of Ob taining More Money to Tide Emergency. BUCHAREST, July 3. Rumania is seeking to place a loan In the United States and want to give as security her six per cent natipnsl bonds, without lien on her forests or her oil properties. According to La Progres the coun try's most confusing problem is the reorganization of finances, which are In a confused condition, partly due to the dumping in Rumania of sev eral billions of Austria-Hungarian crowns, Russian and Ukranian rubles and other worthless moneys, Within the past ten months the value of the lei has decreased from ten to the dol lar to 5S.80 to the dollar, according to the fluctuations of the market. This depreciation is also due, it Is stated, to an illegitimate influx or paper money from Germany. During the German occupation, the German established the general bank of Ru mania and Issued large quantities of paper money bearing the name f this bank. It Is suspected that since the armistice, the Germans have smuggled into Rumania more of this money printed np in Germany. Le Progres atates that at the be ginning of the war the Rumanian national debt was only 500.000.UUJ lei and that now it is more than 30,- 000.000.000 with no means of esti mating the exact imonnti of paper money in circulation. The standard paper money of the country at pres ent is that Issued by the National Bank of Rumania. In June, paper money printed In the United States will go into circa laWon and all other moneys will te with drawn, it is believed, through the Rumanian government, since it haa taken over the new provinces of Transylvania and Bukovlna and Bes sarabia where crowns and rubles are in circulation, baa not yet decided how it will solve note circulation problems or what value will be given to tbeoe old moneys. Meanwhile the Rumanian govern ment Is making a determined effort to stamp out the new Industrie of running cheap moneys over her fron tiers and trading It for lets. At times men have been arrested with rour, five or six billion batches of Austria-.. ungartan notes. Some rf the men arrested have been Amerl cans ofiensibly on automobile tours from Hungary.
