Al averted my eyes ifrom her face Infpltylng embarrassment, for I know of what she was thinking.- If Grace Draper, were landed in the net spread by the secret service, Harry Underwood would in all probability also be enmeshed. It wasn't a par ticularly pleasant thin.? for Lillian to face, this prospect of being instru mental innanding over the man who had been her husband to the rigors of the law; There was one grain of remfort, however. I could give her. one which I had omitted in my story of . . Wil liam's encounter with the pseudo peddler on account of ray reluctance ever to mention Harry Underwood's name. Many of the states were 'distributing their strength as a compliment to - varl ous candidates, however, and seemed almost certain that there would be no nomination on J hat ballot. There were some hisses when Massachusetts cast one of her 36 for William R. Hearst, and there was a roar of applause a moment later when 17 from that state went to Palmer. Another flash of handclap- ping followed announcement of the first rote for W. J. Bryan. It came trom Michigan. Wood llxllot Rolls. The chairman of the New Hamp shire derogation announced three votes for' Wood. He was drowned out by I demands to know whether the candidate was General Wood. A lot of good-natured raillery followed and then It was explained that the votes were for Chandler M. Wood of Boston, president of the Metro politan Trust company As the roll call went on there were few' states outside of those' having favorite sons that did not scatter their total among several candidates Texas was an, exception, giving her .solid delegation of 40 to McAdoo, First Ballot Scattering.
