The "Babe Ruthlne" stunts of Jack Hayes together with the superb twirling of Cole brought a veil earned victory to the Salem Senators and Inglorious defeat to the Wood- burn Tigers at Wood burn last Sun day afternoon. Jack Hayes stepped up to the plate In the first Inning with Bishop and Proctor on the bags and rung the bell thrice by clouting the ball over the right field fence. In the third inning, his second trip to the plate. he greeted the Woodburn twirler with bis second circuit smash on the first pitched ball, and fortunately for Woodburn there were no men on the bases. Hayes' home run being the on ly tally registered that Inning. He was thrown out at a third base on a questionable decision in the eighth inning when he sought to stretch a double into a triple. Jack gathered four hits out of live trios to the plate. It must have been the newly-weds day, for Bishop registered a home run in the seventh making the fourth drive over the fence for the day. the third being made by Whitman of the opposing team. Due to the heavy hitting of the Senators, the game was unusually long, lasting over two hours. Ont- side of the firth inning when the lo cal boys eased np a little and per mitted a few grounders to trickle be tween their legs, enabling the Tigers to score four runs, they had their own way. The Cherry City Twilight league has been exceeding fortunate In hav ing at its helm a man of Mr. Klvln's popularity, executive ability and and managers of the league clubs are deserving of the hearty ro-operatien of their teams. It Is no small task to round up a team once a wtk and look after all of the details which go with the staging of a game. 1 All club leaders have the highest praise for their men for the manner in which they have shown their interest and the efforts they have thrown Into the game. In the future, fans, don't ride the "umps" quite so hard; take It out on the players there's nine of them. The crowds at the 5:30 matinee on Sweetland field have been gradu ally getting larger but as yet there are hundreds of fans who do not know that there Is such a thing as a Twilight league and still many others who know of it but think of It as probably too "brushy- to be of Inter est. All of the games of the present schedule have been botly contested with but a couple of exceptions and four or five overtime contests, two to a tie and one to a scoreless tie have been staged. The games are but five Innings In length. It's some race and there are any one of five teams that can cop the gonfalon for the first leg of the schedule and nobody would be sur prised to see a league leader hauled down.
