PLAYGROUND IS NOT APPROVED City Council Kills Move Simeral Protest Is Indefi nitely Postponed The public ratk committee Iat j niphi reported favorably on Ihe bill which i? before the rity council fr the purchasing of certain property for the purpose of establishing a children's playgrounds. Hut whn a motion was made to have the ordi nance committer instructed to draw tip an ordinance calling for the pu--chare of the ground, the council vot ed !. (Kwn. The Uotary clu'i ha agreed equip the grounds completely if th city will huy the land, but the mem bers of the council who voted no. seem lo think that the expense of purchasing the property Is too mu h for the -city to undertake. A remonstrance against the re moval of the street car track on North Summer street was received by the council from over a hundred persens who reside In that vicinity and was placed on file. Numerous street, alley and sidewalk Improve ment petitions and bills were re ceived by the council. All of the pe titions were ferred to the street or sidewalk committee and the im provement bills were all adopted iv the council. A bill calling for an extension of a spur track across the old Turner road to be built by the Standard Oil company caine tip lor the third reading and the application was grantel. A communication from I.. J. Simeral. defeated caudiaate for city councilman from ward 1 in th election h?ld May 21. protesting the election of H. II. Vandervort. his suc cessful rival. Mr. Simeral alleged in a letter that Vandervort bad circu lated a petition calling for a term of office for two year and that after getting a sufficient number of sign ers, he had changed the petition read a four-year term. The council voted to receive the communication and then indefinitely postpone action on it. Councilman Volk introduced a pe tition t ) amend the ordinance on speeding. The ordinance as it now stands says that a person can be fined from 15 to $50 for the first offense and from $50 to $l"u for vthe second offense. The amendment calls for the imprisonment of the of fender as well as a fine. The coun cil voted lo refer the petition lo the ordinance committee. The bill fixing the salary of the chief of police was read for the third time and it was voted that he would receive the benefit of the lncrea.se from JlTtMi to 11800 a year from X!ay 21. 1820. A sidewalk ordinance was adopted by the council calling for a fine or Imprisonment of any person who has ! started improvements on a sidewalk which does not conform with the grading of the street on which it is located. 10 days after being notified to improve the sidewalk by the street committee. The committee passed a motion to allow Fire Chief Mutton railway e?enses to Is Angeles and back, to attend the Tacific Coat Fir? Chiefs' convention., which will be held in that city some time this summer.
