INDIA IS ABSOLUTELY IMMUNE Viewed from this distance, there is a great deal of smoke for a little flame in the threatened Bolshevist invasion of India. Bolshevism is violent, turbulent and the native populations o India have a icligious horror of all unseemly disturbances. Bolshevism teaches the, rule of the lowest class in the social state ; to the peoples of India, such a rule would mean the damnation of all caste. The customs, prejudices and superstitions of a people are not overthrown in a night. A dozen revolutions among the upper classes might pass over India and leave the mass of its population undisturbed Whether the government were French, British or Russian would little concern the millions who are living, not for the present, but in preparation for the life to come. The native peoples of India take their religion seriously, DEPENDABLE EYE SERVICE We know very well that In ad dition to our proven ability to ex amine eyes accurately, which is vouched for by many whom you know, we must be honest if we expect to- continue in business. We never recommend glasses unless we're sure that good will result from their use. We do not charge any more than you must pay elsewhere for competent service and dependable glasses. One writer says that the mid dle classes hope and the Social Dem ocrats fear that after a short period everything will be as It was before the might of Germany's military power was shattered. As was only to be expected, tfie results of the revo lution have not been up to expecta tions. They never are In one year. The people looked for too much. The chief benefit which has ac: crued to them is that they have got rid of the Hobenzollerns and have established a democratic republic in place of an autocracy. It is also worthy of note that the soviet system has made little pro gress in Germany during the 15 months since the ex-kaiser fled from bis beaten army and became a fugi tive in Holland. The "common peo-. pie" have shown no friendship to ward the Russian system. There does not seem much fear that Bolshevism will make headway in Germany aft er peace is made with the reds. The Teutons would sooner have their Willies back than men of the Lenlne and Trotzky stripe. The present form of government Is still "weak on its pins." How long it will con tinue to prevail one cannot say. It is certain, however, that there can be no change without bloodshed. Many Germans undoubtedly would like to see the monarchy restored; but the Social Democrats who made the revolution in 1918 will have to be wiped out first. The royalists know that and are not prepared to plunge their country into civil war for the sake of the ex-kaiser or the former crown prince. That is a question of easte; it is regulated by decrees whose ori gin is older than that of European civilization. , And it is well ! to remember that the native princes who rule the Indian states are most of them Oxford graduates. They possess culture, and they know "what they would have to expect if the Bol sheviki came. ! They are well satisfied with the support which they receive from the lsritish government. It has kept India at peace for a hundred years: it is a euarantee that none of the native tribes will attack any of the rest ; it gives the tranquility which means more to the native of India than wealth or , power. ;! i Bolshevism means-turmoil; and that is anathema in India. stantial alimony, after a sensational and smutty trial, in which the eter nal "triangle" was prominent.
