low water level in the morning to 11
feet above last night. The river may
continue to rise today, but no dam
age is looked for. No serious high
water damage has yet been reported
aside from, the washing out of the

Claiming that the Y.M.C.A. had In
directly saved the life of his oldest
boy, one of the citizens of Salem took
out four memberships for Christmas
presents for his boys at the Y.M.C.A.
yesterday alternoou. In talking with
the secretary he stated that when hM
boy was enroute to France his s'llp
was submarined and the boy was
hurled into the sea. So far as he
was able to discover the boy remain
ed ia the icy water for at least 15
minutes before he was rescued. He
had learned to swim in the Y.M.C.A.
pool and had become an expert so
that when the crisis came the bov
was ready for it. The man declared
