Dicky asked the stereotjped ques tion on taking off hi, overcoat as if he expected a voluminous pott.- In reality there are -rarely any letters for him among those 1;;ft by the rial wart young postman ct onr door. Ad vertising letters, tradesmen's bills, an occasional note or card from one of the old acquaintances I am hard ly Justified in calling them friends of my teaching dayr these mak ing up our mail. My value as a cor respondent is almost tero, for I loathe writinr; letters, so I rarely get any. and Dicky receives all of his business letters and much of his personal correspondence at his ttu dir. Even his mother addresses her letters to him at his studio, confin ing her epistolary attentions in my direction to picturj postal card. "I am very glad to be able to an swer 'yes for once." I returned, forc ing a note of gayety Into my voice. My uneasiness was not caused by disbelief In his state ment that he bad bought the arti cles because Miss Fairfax was to wear them in posin for the illustra tions of a southern novel he was making, and that the bautifnl Im ported hat he( intended for my own use. The real reason for my dolour was the look I had seen upon .Le child-like face of Edith Fairfax. That she loved Dicky, he who ran might read, and the fear of another epi sode in 1117 life such as II rare Dra per's infatuation for ray husbaai had brought me msd) me most wretched, although I tried my best to hide it. .Dicky looked at me shrewdly as I spoke. I knew that h was not de ceived by my air of rtyviy. but knew also that he' would say nothing which might provoks any discussion of the awkward situation intc which we had been plung-d. "Who's my correspondent?' h asked with a debonair cheerfulness matching my own. "As I haven't real your letter. I don't , know." I retortel rmilin.T. The reverential boyish awe with which he regardel Ilobeit Savarin in earlier yeam had never lert him: In fact. I think It was In tensified by our dramatic discovery of the elder artist in tho Catsmu farmhouse, where he had been liter ally "dead to the world" for 13 tmiil I handed Dicky the letter and he inr. I replied, as I took up the sheet of nntenaner with Its delicat chlro- rranhy. "My very dear friend." the letter beean. "When we parted last tnmn you gave and I accepted invitation to make your home my headauarters when I should decide t revisit New York after my lon exile from It.
