"Jim. he say automobiles e.11 stopped in enow. How Meester Gra ham, he going to get home?" Like an incarnation of I Nemesis. Katie stood In the doorway or the living- room. 1 had sat so long brooding over the feminine laughter I had heard coming over; the wire when I telephoned DickyJ and the possibilities of future raiserr it opened up for me that I had not no ticed the growing violence of the storm outside nor the coming of the winter twilight. With a start I real ized that it was almost dark and that the world outside was one of violent swirling snowflakes. ' ! - "What do you mean, ..Katie." 1 sprang to my feet in dismay. "You cannot mean the taxis 'are stopped." "Everyting!" Katie visibly swelled with the importance of her po sition as the official announcer of bad tidings.' "Jim, he say noting can get two feeta anywhere." .1 rushed to the telephone and called, the Crest Haven Taxi com pany. ' ' . "What about that taxi you prom ised me for Mr. Oraham at the last train out tonight?'' ! demanded, un reasonable as the most untrained woman could possibly be in facing similar emergency,. . j f ! "Keep On Trying.' "We are terribly sorry, Mrs. Gra ham." The manager's voice came back over the telephone.. suave, nn ruffled. I felt resentfully that he was not In the least sorry, that, in fact, he was maliciously glad of the fact that for once It was absolutely out of his'-power to satisfy the Irate DairUUS VDUW IVUIVWUlls mur - be receivinc by the score. I am afraid, a trine wlldlv I am sure I don t know, madam I would suggest that he stay in the city." 1 I hung up the receiver abruptly. Not because I was through talking to the manager of the taxi company. I had a number of things I intended to eav to him later, but because there was a faint chance that I might be able to get Dicky at his studio, But there was no response to ml call, although even while Central kept repeating monotonously, "That number does not answer," I begged her wildly to "keep on trying. I also learned that the storm was not near ly so bad in the city as out on Long Island, and that therefore Dicky vrould have no idea of the situation awaltlnr him until he alighted at Creet Haven. .-. Without Any Success. l I eat down and tried to marshal my remembrances of Dicky's friends in the hope .that I might be able to get some traee of him. Lillian Underwood was, of course, my first thought, but upon calling her num ber I learned that the line was out of order on account of the storm. I thought of calling the art editors. whom I had heard Dicky mention and then a glimmer of common sense made me abandon the plan even as my hand was outstretched to the telephone. I knew that only the most desperate emergency, one of life or death, would mate Dicky forgive my hunting his whereabouts among his professional friends by telephone.
