Ellis Stegall. wanted by the Washington county authorities on a charge of wite de sertion, was apprehended by Deputy Sherifr T. B. Hooker in a hop yard near Independence and brought to this city where was placed in the county jail awaiting the arrival of a Washington county ofriclal when he will be taken back to llillsbor to await trial. Stegall was a member of the spruce division and during the war was sta tioned at St. Helens where he met and mam-id a young woman He is alleged to have left her as won as he received bis discharge. Since that time he has failed to contribute any thing towards' her support it is claim ed, and all efforts-to locate him have been unavailing.
