QUIET STRENGTH
NEW YORK, April l.-y-The quiet
strength of. today's stock market be
spoke further confidence in a suc
cessful outcome of the titanic strug

Traiding was again in very small
volume, but' investment shares held
their ground in the main.
The government's recent ruling on
stock loans' probably accounted for
sporadic short covering among cer
tain leaders, especially United States

more than half of its one-point gain.
Coppers were relatively more active.
than at any time in the last month,
gains of one to one'and a half points

utilities and some minor specialties
scored gross gains of ' one . to four
points, but the motor group, espec

under pressure. Inquiry for rails
were exceedingly light, but firmness
prevailed in that division. Total
sales amounted to 188,000 shares.
Bonds, including th liberty issues.
were irregularj on light offerings;
