O o o 0 Youxg 3Ie-. Most young men consider it a great misfortune to be poor, or not to have capital enough to establish themselves at theiroutset of life in a good busi ness. This is a mistaken notion. So far from poverty being a mis fortune to him, if we may judge from what we every day behold, it is really a blessing; the chance is mone than ten to one against the youth who starts with plenty of mofiby. Let any one look back twenty years, and see who com menced business at that time with O abundant means, and trace them down to the present day. How many of these now boast wealth and standing'? On the contrary, how many have become poor, lost their places in society, and are passed by their own boon compan ions with a look which painfully Bays, "I know you not !" Think. Do your own thinking. Yes, that is the idea. Think for yourself. It is well to listen to the expressed thoughts of others, and it is an agreeable pastime to give expression to your thoughts; but "when alone, weigh what you have said, and traverse what you have said. It is well to do thisi, for it will assit in curing 3-011 of false notions, and in eradicating unprofit able and vicious ideas, and in time make you better men and women. What you thus gain from surround ings, you will unwittingly transmit to the rising generation, and the result will be, that you will do your share in the glorious work of elevating the human family. Do your own thinking. TirPjWKAI.TU Ol-' T1IK L'viTKI) S TATKS. The census Bureau 1ms begun to figure up the totals obtained by the last census. According to these returns, the total value of property in the United States in 1870, 'with some exceptions, was SLh OoO. d;)if -IKK), against 3lO,.VJi).OiK,uO() hi 18(ii), show ing an increase of nearly twenty-live per cent, during the decade in which the ro b e 1 1 i 0 n o c c u r r e d . Kcch'.u 1 je. Actually, according to these figures, there has been scarcely any increase in the value of the property of the nation. The figurts fr 18(10 show the value of the property on a go 11 basis those of 1870 n a currency basis. As at the time the census of 1870 was taken, currency, com pared with gold, was at 22 per cent, be low par, it follows that the gold value of the property of the country in 1870 was scarcely, if any, greater than it was in O 1800. In other woids, during ten years the country made no appreciable advance triAve tilth. The actual, not apparent, in crease in the value of the property of the country from I80O to 1800 was 7.3 per cent. Ez. 0 The Xew York Daily Sun, with a determination to cook Farmer Greeley's political goose, persist ently keeps the lollowiug annouce cment at its editorial head : "For President The Great and Good Horace Greclev, ol Texas and Xew York." Dana, the Sim editor, who was once Horace's Chief of Staff, on the Trilxni', tells a story that the Philosopher froze to an attache of the concern, simply because he al ways wore a dirty shirt, and blowed his nose with his fingers. Ax Unwilling Father. A story is told cf a father in a church, who, when the marriage services -came to the point where the clergy man asks, "Who giveth this wo man to be married to this man?" replied, "Well sir, I am called to Gdo it, although it do go agin the grain. I wanted Iter to marrv Dill Powser, who is worth twice tl 10 money o' that ere man." swer was not considered The an regular. According to the June state ment of the public debt, it appears that the Government still keeps about si 00,000,000 in the Treasury, of course drawing no interest, Cwhile at the same time it pays six per cent, in gold upon that "which the $100,000,000 would liquidate. This is the financial wisdom of this Jidministrathyn. A Sunday-school teacher asked a little girl, who was the first man. She answered that she didn't know. The question was then put to an Irish girl who answered "Adam, Sir," with apparent satisfaction. "Da!" said the first child, "you needn't feel so grand about it he wasn't an Irishman." Says the Psalmist, "He maketh mof.i-et like hind's feet." A negro preacher read it "hen's f "t," and proceeded tosay "dat hen in the henroost, when it falls asleep, tighten's its o-rlp so's not to fall oil. And dafs how true faith, my bredren. holds on to the rock " Pkkfix-tly Coni-kntki). A re o porter of a Cincinnati paper at tempted to interview one of lirig ham Young's wives, the other day, but she quickly dismissed him by saying "I will have nothing to do with you I am perfectly con sented. I get everything that I need, and have an easy, pleasant ftfe.
