From the Daily Herald.
Chas. Pain, who was arrested a short
time since on the suspicion of having mur
dered his partner, at Astoria, has been dis
charged from custody. The surmosed
dead man made his appearance, and. of
course. ;he charge against Pain was dis
missed. A young s-on of Ed. Chambrrau had his
arm broken while engaged in playing last
Saturday t.lternoou. "
We have from time to time warned our
citizens that there was a great deal ot
counterfeit coin in circulation in and
aroui.d this city. Our warnings have
been disregarded, and a3 a consequence
we hear most every day of some one being-taken
in.r' The execution ot these
counterfeits is in some cases good, while
in others the work is very inferior.
The bark Almatia brought up, on her
last trip, a large quantity f material for
the Salem Oas Works. From present in
dications, our friends will soon enjoy the
luxury of having their city lighted by gas.
Dr. Loryea. while in the Eastern States,
purchased a llambletoniau horse lull
brother to the celebrated trotter Dexter.
The animal is on his way out here and
will shortly arrive.
The Odd Fellows have negotiated upon
a mortgage upon their building a loan ot
twenty thousand dollars Irom the bank of
Pritish Columbia. The money wid tie ex
pemled in finishing the exterior of the
building.
From a gentleman recently from San
Francisco we learn that it is the intention
to form several parties to make an excur
sion trip to this State (luring the coming
summer. A large number of persons will
visit this coast the present year from the
Eastern States, and quite a number ol
them will visit this tetate before they re
turn home. Our citizens should exert
themselves to m ike their visitors' stay as
pleasant as possible.
The members of the Fifteenth Amend
ment Club represent that the Radical pot
liic ans are endeavoring to have the words
irrespective of parly'' stricken .rum the
Constitution ot the Club. Quite a large
number of the dark member.-; object, but
the white Radicals threaten to withdraw
if the words are retained. Gentlemen,
give the poor black a chance.
We learn that the heavy trestle work
bridge on the West si le road, about two
mdes from the city, has fallen in. 'I he
late rains had washed away the earth on
eiiher side and the biidgegave way. The
damage is considerable.
The rumor reached us yesterday that

cus. Upon repairing to East Portland
we ascertained the laci that Chas. Adams.
a conductor on the road, had broken his

We learn that Judge Walling, an old
and esteemed citizen of Polk county, met
with a severe if not fatal accident yester
day, lie was at work on the road with
his team, which ran away. Our informant
thinks it not possible ior him to survive.
He has since died.
