William A. Newell, formerly gov

man of considerable prominence in
the East. Although a physician in
active practice be took an interest
in politics and was a member of con
gress froru New Jersey in 184 4f
and 1866-67. He was governor of
tbal state in 1857-69. In 1870 he
was a candidate for the sann office,
but was defeated by Genera'; George
B. McClelian. In the year 1 880 be
was appointed governor of Washing
ton territory and be'ui the position
till 1 SS4. From 1884 to 1886 be
was Indian commissioner 10 the
territory.
rovernor Newel! s most con
spicuous public work was tbe organi-
zation of tbe L nited States life saving wagon at the railroad camp en the mis

Jersey, where he had passed tbe
greater pait of bis life and with
which he always associated his best
