Although a physician in active practice be took an interest in politics and was a member of con gress froru New Jersey in 184 4f and 1866-67. He was governor of tbal state in 1857-69. In 1870 he was a candidate for the sann office, but was defeated by Genera'; George B. McClelian. In the year 1 880 be was appointed governor of Washing ton territory and be'ui the position till 1 SS4. From 1884 to 1886 be was Indian commissioner 10 the territory. rovernor Newel! s most con spicuous public work was tbe organi- zation of tbe L nited States life saving wagon at the railroad camp en the mis service.
