The Dalles Daily Chronicle. FRIDAY - - APRIL 10. 1901 J. A. EBERLE, Leading- wm Merohant Tailor, Second Street, opposite Mays & Crowe, We have an excellent line of Spring Suitings, Printings, etc., which we are prepared to make up in the latest styles, and guarantee a perfect tit. OOM PAUL AND RELIGION. If, says an exchange, Oom Paul, ex-president of the Transvaal, finally comes to America in the interest of his South African goyernment, he will find that there is quite a differ ence between a republic as we in terpret it and as he has been in the custom of ruling, and it is this differ encc which has been one of the greatest drawbacks he has had to contend with in his contest for as sistance. When the Transvaal republic recognized in its constitution only the Protestant religion and refused to tolerate worship by Catholics, Jews or Atheists, it cut the very heart of a real republic. A few weeks ago when Gen. Dewet was dealing with Gen, Kitchener, and the two were endeavoriug to ascer tain grounds on which satisfactory arrangements could be made be tween the British and the Transvaal, this point came up and was the great stumbling block in the negotiations Gen. Dewet desired that the same religious restrictions that bad been prevailing in the republic be con tinued during British control. This Kitchener would not concede and the peace negotiations were broken off. It will continue to be so through time. The civilized nations have for years been becoming more and more liberal in the matter of religious worship. While the early history of the Dutch before and after settle ment in the Transvaal made it ap pear that all other forms of worship, except the Protestant, was detri mental to their welfare and peace of mind, this was a result of the form of government under which the re ligion was enforced rather than of the religion itself. As the fore fathers of Oom Paul suffered from the heresies of governmental religion, so after the formation of the Trans vaal government it made it unpleas ant for the worshippers under all other forms of religion than the protestants, and we have seen where Oom Paul himself drove the Jews and the Catholics from his country. Evidently Mr. Kruger has not ad vanced with the republics of the world, and if be should come over to America be will be surprised to find that our growth, our oontentment and our success as a nation, great in everything, has been clue largely to our liberality in matters of religious worship. As for Mr. Kruger, he cannot expect that the world will be in love with his form of government and ready to take sides for its con tinuance, unless be advances a few steps in civilization and gives to the Catholics and to the Jews the right to worship God that be reserves to himself. Mr. Kruger has kept bis government too closely confined in prejudice for it to be popular as a republic. Oom Paul is to be the guest of tbe democratic party in New York. This seems odd to the Globe-Demo- crat. Tho democrats arc not fight ers, and heaven knows they never have anything to do with the Psalms.
