WEDNESDAY
JAN. 1G, 1901
MAX UFA CTUIIED THUNDER.
"Now various sections of Ibe state
are determined to emphasize the
need of action by appealing to
the legislators, now assembled at thu
capital, to elect Senator Corbett.
This they do through the press, and
the calls to this paper arc not few.
As the consequence of immediate
action by Senator Corbett in the
senate, we have the Siuslaw harbor
people in Lane county urging relief,
tben comes Yaquina Bay, and in fact
all the harbors along the coast which
scud to the outer world, in ships, the
products of all Oregon; and the great
upper Columbia river farmers and
stock raisers are each sending special
messages to the legislature asking
that their common benefactor, friend
and statesman, Senator Corbett, shall
represent them."
Here is a sample of the stuff thai
makes the Baker City Republican
absolutely ridiculous. There is not
a word of truth in the statement, and
The Chronicle knows the sentiment
of the people of Eastern Oregon
quite as well as the Republican does.
There is no demand for Corbett's
election, such as the Republican de
scribes. The newspapers of Eastern
Oregon are as clear an index as any
other as to the sentiment of the
people, and of some thirty Eastern
Oregon exchanges that come to this
office only three are outspoken for
Corbett, while three 'times that num
ber and more have no use for him
in the wide world. If Eastern Ore
gon bad a chance to vote for the
United States senator, Corbett never
would know that he was in the race.
AND WHAT THEXt
It does appear the United States
supreme court will hold that the con
stitution does follow the flag, and, if
it does, the administration will hardly
have a leg to stand on its policy
towards Porto Rico, Hawaii and the
Philippines. East Oregonian.
And then ? Why then the inhabi
tants of the islands, without respect
to color, race, barbarism or civiliza
tion, are full-fledge'cl citizens of the
United States and entitled to all the
privileges of American citizenship.
Then our entire revenue system ap
plies to them, and applies at once,
no matter whether it is adapted to
their -conditions or not. Then they
are entitled to a voice in the election
of president and vice-president, and
their representatives in congress arc
entitled to a voice in the making of
our and their laws. And, lastly, the
islands being part of the United
States can no more dc allowed to
secede, or be abandoned to them
selves, or allowed to establish a
government of their own, independ
ent of the rest of the United States,
than the state of New York or -Oregon.
Corbett's sack is open and already
there are those who arc the recipients
of his wonderful generosity. It is
said that his favors have been dis
pensed as far away from home as
Baker City, says the Baker City
Democrat.
"Woe to us as a nation if we ever
follow the lead of men who seek not
to smother but to inflame the wild
beast qualities of the human heart!"
Hon. Theodore Roosevelt.
FOOTBALL NOTES.
Ae Friday's game is the last and best
of the eeaaon, the business men of the
town are being urged to close their
places oi business from 2 :30 to 4 :!!0 p. m.
This Is a worthy move and will doubt
less meet with success,
The visitors fro.a Portland, who will
meet our D. C, & A. C. aggregation, are
composed of the regular second Mult
nomah players, the nu-jority of whom
will compose the regular Multnomah
first team for 11)01. It is therefore very
desirable that our club team should
make a good allowing. In fact, they are
in hard training and have every confi-
dence of winning. The Dalles team is a
very strong one, from every standpoint.
Tickets for both football game and
benefit ball are beinc sold by ball play
ers and others Interested.
It is the intention of our athletes to
conduct all future caines and sports
nnder tlie auspices of The Dalles Com
mercial and Athletic Club. This will
give the boye a standing that is very
desirable.
TLe following door committee has
been selected for the Friday evening
ball : Frank A. French, John H. Hamp
shire, Albert Gude, John Cooper, Harry
Bighani, L. A. Portor and H. D. Parkins.
Nothing that these gentlemen ever lend
their names to aile, hence the ball is an
assured success.
Multnomah colors are red and white;
D. C. & A. C, yellow and white. Won't
our business men lend some help in
creating a little enthusiaeni by decorat-
their show windows?
Every person attending the game Fri
day ahould wear colore ot one or the
other of the teaniB. Oi course, The
CimoNici.E likes patriotism, but above
all it enjoys enthusiasm, when the
interests of the town are at stnk'.
These games are beneficial. They teuu
to unite the people of a town. They en
courage sobriety utnone participants,
for dissipation and athletic cannot
dwell together. Above all, a progressive
town is the one that keeps in line in all
departments, and permits no Bister
place to out-do her in enterprise. This
is the true spirit.

the best of malt and choicest of bops. Its tonic qualities are of the high
