Co. has a construction gang, under
foreman Fred Kress, at work putting
new foundations under their depot at
this place. They are also making some
needed repairs to the other buildings
owned by the company. On the comple
tion of thia work the construction force
will co to The Dalles to givo the com
pany's buildings at that place, an over
hauling.

Kashas City, Mo., April 30. The Pop
ulist state convention opened here to
day. Tho party has nbout 300 delegates,
some of the counties having no organiza
tions. Tho convention will nominate a
state ticket and select delegates to the
Kational convention. Tho Populists say
that they will never fuse with the Demo
crats in Missouri again. Four years ago
they decided against fusion, but when
the campaign began to warm up their
candidate for governor, O. D. Jones, of
Edina, withdrew, and the name of Lon
V. Stephens was placed at the head of
tho stato ticket.

Whitnker and 'Fallow Dick" Comber,
indicted as principals in (he Goebel as
sassination, and secretary of state Caleb
Powers and Captain John Daviee, in
dicted as nssessories, are being arraigned
before Judge Catrill today. The at
torneys asked for bail, and filed petitions
and affidavits asking for a change of
venue.

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters
and Joiners has sent out notice to all
employere in Brooklyn making the de
mands mentioned and asking that they
be granted on May 1.

the Jahannesbuig explosion, the govern
ment has ordered British subjects, with
a few exceptions, to leave the republic

Hearing Kentucky Cane.
Washington, April 30. The hearing
in the Kentucky governorship contest is
beingjiad in the United States supieme
court today. The lawyer for each side
will have four hours in which to sum up.
The case has been expedited to bring
about an early settlement of the present
dangerous state of affairs in Kentucky.
