London, Dec. 16. The war ofiieo has
received a dispatch announcing that
General Bul'.er lias met with a serious
reverse, losing eleven guns. General
' Buller was attempting to cross the
Tugela river. Finding it impossible to
effect his object, lie ordered a retirement
in order to avcid greater losses. He left
eleven guns behind.
The losses in General Hunt's brigade
were very heavy. The Fourteenth and
Sixty-ninth field batteries also suffered
severo losses.
Buller has retired to the camp nt
Cneveley.
Pketokia, Wednesday. Advices from
Mnfeking say an attack on a small
Britisli fort has been made with good
results. The fort was demolished.
Heavy cannon firing is proceeding.
Colonel Baden-Powell has sent the Boers
a notice, advising theji to lay down
their arms and return to their homes,
promising protection as soon as Great
Britain has taken over the Transvaal.
PitETOKiA, Friday -An official dispatch
from Modder river says: Tho Boers
caDtured a creat quantity of loot, in
cluding 200 Lee Metforde, cases of cart
ridges, and hundreds of bayonets. Great
numbers cf the British forces have re
tired in tho direction of Belmont. The
loss of the British was very great. There
were heaps of dead on the field. Tho
wounded are being attended to tem
porarily at Hiasel'a farm. The Sapper6
and Aimers must have suffered severely.
The Boers suffered heavy losses in horses
and I cannot otherwise ilescribo the
battlefield than a sad terrible slaughter.
Monday was or us a brilliant victory.

ami will enable them to achieve .greater
deeds.

A startling incident, of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadelphia, was tho
subject, is narrated by him as follows:

In the Jury's Hands.
Portland, Dec. 16. The trial of
Frank E. McDaniel, for the murder of
Claire Adelaide Fitch, was finished to
night and at 11 o'clock the case was
given to the jury.
Each side occupied four hours in the
argument today, and Judge George de
livered an exhaustive charge to the jury.
At midnight the jury was locked up and
instructions given the foreman to seal
tho verdict if the jury should agrees
before morning.
Claire Fitch, a girl of 19, was mur
dered by strangulation in Cycle Park,
on tho night of July 10th, last, and hur
sweetheart, Frank McDaniel, a young
truck driver, about 19 years of age, was
arrested tlie next night ami charged
with the crime.

Boer Sympathizers at Spokane.

ing of a number of merchants and other
citizens tonight, resolutions of sympathy
with the Boors were adopted, and over
$600 was collected for the benefit of the
wives and children of the Boers in tho
