his mind that he'd like to look out of
the window. He rolled over and
climbed up on the seat, says the Wash

"Now, don't do that," said mammu.
"You know you've had one nwful fall
to-day doing that, so sit right down.
"Where did I fall, ma?" lie piped,
shrilly.
"In the street car."
"Did I hurt myself?" he asked.
"Yes," she nnswered.
"Where?" and he looked anxious.
"On the hand," his mother replied.
Master Chunk raised one cushion of a
hand to his head, and then, without the
slightest warning, he let up a roar that
would have made the bull of Bashau

she'd know the reason why.

A funny incident happened during a
performance of "Macbeth" in Dublin.
In the sleep-wnlking scene, when the
nurse and the doctor appear on the
stoge together mid confabulate with
one another, a loud voice suddenly
called out from the gallery, causing a
roar of laughter in the middle of a most
serious scene: "Well, doctor, is it a
boy or a girl?"

BIRTH OF A FASHION PLATE
.Modern Art n I.lliel on Women's Tnnle
Which All True Men
Must Uncut.
Ah! for the good old times when nr
tlsts, real artists, could be persuaded
to design n costume. One of the prin
eipul Items of expense to iv lady of oh
Italy used to be the "retainer" Mie paii
to a J)a Iik'i, n i.ramante, or sum
other artist of note, to furnish her with
a design for her court and other dresses
oJ ceremony, says Self-Culture.
To-day some one who can draw
given an idcn by acostunier that is, by
sume one who has made or cut dresses
under some other costiiiner's tutelage
Neither one has studied or mires might
lor art, proportion, harmony, or the
other supeilluities; they are ens
tumors; what have thev to do with
such details? A wonderful assemblage
of ideas is the result, a confection in
silks, satins, chiffons and laces. These
ideas and materials arc beautifully am
painfully drawn upon paper and draped
upon an alleged female figure at lei.st
seven feet tall, with bend slightly
turned, auburn hair, sylphlike waist,
a stage smile and a background of
palms and ferns.
This drawing being reproduced upon
thousands and thousands of sheets, In!
a fashion plate is born, with the nanu
of the great designer in the left-hann
corner, the password, the hall mark!
Every woman, or rather, nearly every
woman, studies it, admires it, and, l.i
she lean or fat, tall or short, bur next
dress must be Jike that. Pchchance her
dressmaker has not signed her soul
away entirely and protests feebly that
that special style is not adapted to her
patron's particular figure; but for her
effrontery she may lose a customer,
That dress has to be made in that way
and in nonu other.

All Sins Arc Punished by
Starvation.
In the whole wide world there is not
a class of people to be found who in
lliet severer punishment upon them
selves than the Cnribs of Central Amer
ica. Their religion, which is one of
the moat peculiar kind, demands self
punislunent for sins intentionally or
unintentionally committed, says Pear
son's Weekly.
The punishment takes the form of
starvation nnd close confinement.
If the sin be in the form of a lie, no
matter whether it is calculated to in
jure another or not, the sinner goes
without either food or think for three
days, at the end of which it is be
lieved that the offender .has paid the
penalty for his or her sin.
Blaspheming and using bad language
is punishable by absolute starvation for
two days. Assault, drunkenness and
other serious sins call for four days
starvation for one week, three days'
starvation for the second week, and
two days' starvation for the third week,
and one day's starvation in tlie fourth
week-.
All sins are punished with starvation.
For that reason crime is very low
among the Caribs, who are among the
best behaved mid most truthful people
in the world.
