, This morning The Dalles was visited
by a warm rain which again made our
streets rather muddy.
All bills outstanding against The
Dalles Club Minstrels will, -be .paid on
presentation to R. H. Lonsdale.
The timbers under. the building occu
pied by J. P. Mclnerny as a dry , goods
store, are being replaced today by new
UUCB. -
At a special school neeting held in
the Court street school houee yesterday
afternoon those present from school dis
trict No. 12 voted a tax of. 1VZ mills.
This is the same tax as was levied last
year.
While alighting from the passenger
train last night Elmer Jones fell and
sustained a double fracture of his right
arm. Dr. ilollieter was called and re
lieved the patients suffering and he is
renting easy today.
About a week ago near John's mill,
Ralph Long had the misfortune to chop
off one of bis biz toes. He was brought
to town today and sought the services
of Dr. Hollieter, who is treating the
wound, which is quite a bad one.
The handsome steel ceiling and trim

. appearance of the interior of . the build
ing. When finished this will be. 'one of
the handsomest and best equipped
buildings in the northwest;
Owing to the increase in business The
Dalles Steam Laundry found that their
old boiler was not sufficient to do their
work, so they were compelled to send
below and get a larger one which has
just been put in place. . They are now
prepared to do all work given them in a
speedy and satisfactory manner.
On February 14th, St. Valentine Day,
Cascade Lodge No. 303, B. P. O. Elks
will give their grand ball. Parsons
. orchestra of Portland has-been engaged
and every detail to make the affair a

Polk Mays, a prominent cattle man of
Wallowa county, unloaded four carloads
of bjg eteers at the stockyards last Fri
day that he had shipped up from The
Dalles to eat some of his surplus hay on
bis Wallowa county' ranch. This is a
little out of the usual line in etock ship
ments. but Mr. Mays evidently conclud
ed be could make it pay' or he would not
have made the shipment. La Grande

The Dalles Club MinatrelB repeated
their performance last night to about
two hundred people arid were warmly
received. There wee a tew slight
changes from the previous evening but
practically the same show was given as
on the first night. Everything ran
somewhat smoother than on the open
ing night as the boys were more familiar
with their turns. They were exceeding
ly good and merited all the patronage
bestowed upon them.
The following children can be had for
adoption by addressing I. F. Tobey, sup
erintendent of the Oregon Cbildrens'
Home Society at 606 Marquam building,
Portland, Oregon : One girl baby, aged
three months. One boy baby, aged four
months. One baby boy aged twenty-
two months. One boy aged three and a
half years. One girl eleven years old.
These are all desirable children. Several
good homes . are wanted for older
Children, and by writing to the above

We clip the following from yesterday's
Oregonian:
Victor Ward, youngest son of "Long"
Ward, an old-time settler, and one of
the wealthiest farmers of Wasco county,
and Miss Lottie. E. Baker, of.The Dallee,
were married . ut the Columbia hotel..
Vancouver, at 9 o'clock Saturday even
ing. 1 bey were very sly about it, in
tending to surprise friends. 'Mr. Ward
has been in the . city for about three
weeks, and Mies Baker came down about
a week ago, and. foundll the arrange
ments for the weddingcomplete. With
out saying anything to their friends they
went over'to Vancouver Saturday even
ing, and were quietly married. As this
stymie of getting married deprived the
friends of the cob pie of the opportunity
of making the usual wedding present,
Mr. Ward presented his bride with a
check for $1000, to make up for this.
The happy pair will return to The Dalles
this morning, and will take up' their
residence on the old Ward homestead.

Chronicle : The motion to reconsider
the vote passing, re-apportionment 'was
ruled out of 6rder. Carter and Reeder
appealed to the house and were sus
tained by the speaker. J . . '
Lord is pushing the graft providing for
the purchase of ten acres of stumps, near
Salem, for a location of the mute school.
The consideration is six thousand dol
lars, while the property is only esti
mated to be worth about three hundred.
The house voted $200 to procure more
stamps. The vote on Wheeler county
was reconsidered by the house and the
measure was passed.
The bill for the sugar beet bounty was
reconsidered and passed the house,
twenty-one voting aye.
