TES EXCELLENCE CF SYKCP OF FiGS
Is due not only to the orig-inality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the Califohnia Fig Svbup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California. Fiq Syrup Co.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
Imitations manufactured by other pet
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fi9 Syrup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of

Cyclone Swept South
Victoria. B. C, Jan. 26. The steam
er Aorangi, from Australasia, brings de
tails of the terrible cyclone which swept
the South soas pbout the middle ofDec,
devastating villages, wrecking shipping
and causing many deaths.
At Samarai, in New Guinea, on De
cember 11, the gale was terrific. Cocoa
palms went down by hundreds ani were
carried to sea. Torrents of rain fell.
Twelve vessels were lost.
In the Solomons the hurricane did
the most damage, whole villages being
destroyed. Hundreds of the plantations
were uprooted and yam patches leveled.
Over 500 natives are reported to have
been killed.
Captain Pentecost, of the yacht St.
Aubin, who brought the news of the
disaster to Sydney, says he eaved a
woman who was to have been killed as
a sorceress, she being accused of having
caused the hurricane. He bought her,
the purchase price being a pig, and took
her to another island, w here she was released.

Mr. Jas. A. Jones, publisher of the

case I used Chamberlain's Cough Rem

days against ten days for the former at

would have been equally as bad as the
first but for the use of this remedy as 1

being 'struck' with it, while in the first

Stabbed by a Pupil.
Albany, Mo., Jan 26. T. B. Hunter,
a teacher in the Adams school , twelve
miles northeast of here, has been fatally
stabbed by a 13-year-old pupil named
Charles Avers, whom he was whipping.
The boy is in jail here.
According to the statement of the pu
pils Hunter was punishing Avers by
holding a switch cloee to his face, bend
ing it back and allowing it to snap
againBt him. The switch almost drew
the blood every time.
Suddenly the boy whipped out a jack
knife and made a slash at the teacher's
throat. The blade struck beneath the
left ear and went down half around the
neck, cutting a frightful gash. The child
ren all fled from the school after the
stabbing, and Hunter was left some time
without assistance.
