A dispatch to the Herald from Washington eays : Rear-Admiral Kautzhas been instructed upon his arrival with the "Philadelphia at Apia to investigate the entire Samoan situation and report the facts to the de partment. Reinforced by this report the depart ment will be able to follow up its de mands to the German government through Ambassador White, provided the report confirms the dispatches sent by Consul-General Osborne. The department officials believe that the Philadelphia, nnder the orders tele graphed to Rear-Admiral Kautz, will leave San Diego Thursday for Honolulu enroute to Apia. The vessel may be delayed in case Chief Engineer A. B. Chase should not put in an appaarance. It is expected that within fifteen days the cruiser will reach her destination. The steam er Aorangi, from Australasia, brings de tails of the terrible cyclone which swept the South soas pbout the middle ofDec, devastating villages, wrecking shipping and causing many deaths. At Samarai, in New Guinea, on De cember 11, the gale was terrific. Cocoa palms went down by hundreds ani were carried to sea. Torrents of rain fell. Twelve vessels were lost. In the Solomons the hurricane did the most damage, whole villages being destroyed. Hundreds of the plantations were uprooted and yam patches leveled. Over 500 natives are reported to have been killed. Captain Pentecost, of the yacht St. Aubin, who brought the news of the disaster to Sydney, says he eaved a woman who was to have been killed as a sorceress, she being accused of having caused the hurricane. Stabbed by a Pupil. Albany, Mo., Jan 26. T. B. Hunter, a teacher in the Adams school , twelve miles northeast of here, has been fatally stabbed by a 13-year-old pupil named Charles Avers, whom he was whipping. The boy is in jail here. According to the statement of the pu pils Hunter was punishing Avers by holding a switch cloee to his face, bend ing it back and allowing it to snap againBt him. The switch almost drew the blood every time. Suddenly the boy whipped out a jack knife and made a slash at the teacher's throat. The blade struck beneath the left ear and went down half around the neck, cutting a frightful gash.
