The postponed Christmas exercises cf
the Methodist Sunday School which
were held last evening in the auditorium
of the chnrch, were quite novel and
srreatly enjoyed by the children. AJarge
tree had been decorated and from it ex
tended strings which bad been woren
into a complete epider- web reaching in
to the lecture room and all through the
choir loft, at the commencement of the
strings were the names of the younger
pupils of the echool, w ho were required
to unwind the web until their present 8
were discovered at the other end of the
string. It was feared that much con
fusion would be engenered and the web
become a mass of tangles. However, so
oraeny were the children that with the
assistance ot their teachers each- one. was
soon in possession of a toy or book.
At the commencement a short pro
gram wks rendered; cousist'ng of singing
by the schoo'fan addrees by the pastor,
a song by the infant class and recitations
by -Garldi-e-I$eHy and -Vetna Withain.
Altogether, ''despite ' the fact that
Christmaa.was in reality over, its joys
were still theirs and the children were
made Very happy.
. After the exercises at the church a
number of Epworth Leaguers adjourned
to the home of Rev. and Mrs. Wood and

The Lakme's Lime Must Not Be Dumped
Into the Columbia.
Astohia, Or., Dec. 29. Captain Klit
jaardt of the et earner Lack me, has been
notified by the local authorities not to
permit any of his cargo of lime to be dis
charged into the river. He. is helpless
in the matter as bis vessel is now in the
hands of the underwriters, pending an
examination as to ber condition. CMy
Attorney Allen took the initiative by in
structing Chief of Police Hallock and
Harbor-Master Reid to notify Captain
Klitjaard that the laws of the city and
state declare it unlawful to dump any
matter in the river that is injurious to
A the fiah, and that lime is well known to
be fatal to young salmon, end that no
salmon will run near where lime is in
a stream. City Attorney Alien said this
evening that his action was based on the
law and information from fisliprmon nf
many year's experience, who told him
mat it was an old trick of opposition
trapmen or gillnetters who desired to in
jure a trapman to drop some lime in
front of a trap and no salmon would en
ter it. The amount of slack lime now in
the Lack rue. If thrown overboard, is said
to be enough to kill all the young salmcn
now in. the river below here, and to pre
vent any from coming' for several
months.
The fire in the hold of the Lakme has
been extinguished, and she is now wait
ing an examination.
