Astohia, Or., Dec. 29. Captain Klit jaardt of the et earner Lack me, has been notified by the local authorities not to permit any of his cargo of lime to be dis charged into the river. He. is helpless in the matter as bis vessel is now in the hands of the underwriters, pending an examination as to ber condition. CMy Attorney Allen took the initiative by in structing Chief of Police Hallock and Harbor-Master Reid to notify Captain Klitjaard that the laws of the city and state declare it unlawful to dump any matter in the river that is injurious to A the fiah, and that lime is well known to be fatal to young salmon, end that no salmon will run near where lime is in a stream. City Attorney Alien said this evening that his action was based on the law and information from fisliprmon nf many year's experience, who told him mat it was an old trick of opposition trapmen or gillnetters who desired to in jure a trapman to drop some lime in front of a trap and no salmon would en ter it. The amount of slack lime now in the Lack rue. If thrown overboard, is said to be enough to kill all the young salmcn now in. the river below here, and to pre vent any from coming' for several months. The fire in the hold of the Lakme has been extinguished, and she is now wait ing an examination. BnBklen'i Arnica salve.
