J. V. Creightou, the traveling freight
agent of the Northern Pacific, is very
much pleased with the business outlook
in the Inland Emprial, Bays the Tele
gram. He has just returned from a
swing around the circle in Eastern Ore
gon and Washington, and finds evidence
of prosperity on every hand.
The attraction at Bonneville park for
next Sunday, July 31st, will be the en
gagement of DeBoe, the aerial wonder,
late from Hammerstein's, Olympic and
Koster & Bial'e, New York City, with
other attractions. DeBoe's perform
ances are beyond belief, except to eye
witneeees. Fare only 50 cents for round
trip from Dalles.
Large crowds of excursionists are tak
ing advantage of the low Sunday excur
sions via the O. R. & N. to Hood River,
Cascade Locks and Bonneville. The
fare being only 50 cents for the round
trip to these points, this arrangement
affords the cheapest and most enjoyable
outinsr within reach of Dallesites, who
are not slow to take advantage of it.
Today Mr. I. P. Joles and wife, Miss
Pearle Joles and Mies B. Schooling will
leave on the Dixon for Moffatt Spring,
where they will establish a camp. For
the next month their friends will find
them "at home at Camp Havana," and
as The Chronicle hopes to have a cor
respondent in that vicinity in a short
time, a lengthy write-up of the camp
may be expected.
A Kansas man has discovered the
reason that an engine is called she, and
his argument is that they wear a jacket,
and aprons, have shoes, hose, and drag
a train behind them ; they have a lap,
need guides, ride wheels, will not turn
out for pedestriane, sometimes foam
and refuse to work, they attract men,
are very contrary and it always takes a
man to manage them.

Yeaterduy evening Frank O'Leary ar
rived from Portland on the Dixon. He
states that his father, John O'Leary, is
getting along splendidly, being able to
sit up in an invalid chair, and is in good
health and. spirits. His leg has been
removed from the plaster paris mold
and fixed so that he can move around
on crutches. In a short time, if he con
tinues to improve, he will be in shape
to be removed to bis home in Sherman
county.
Commencing Sunday, July 31st, the
new Dalles-Portland passenger train will
arrive at The Dalles from Portland at
11:30 a. m. on- week days and 1 -.30 p.
m. on Sundays. - Will leave The Dalles
at 3 p.m. on week days and 3 :20 p. to.
on Sundays. Commencing Sunday,
July 31st, the west-bound local freight,
No. 23, will leave The Dalles at 7 :45 a.
in. The east-bound freight, No. 24,
will leave The Dalles at 4 p. in.

Miss Carrie Stone, of Athena, who h
for some time been suffering from eto- -ach
trouble, her death being but a qr a
tion of a short time, was taken to the
hospital to be operated on as a laet re
sort. Dr. Ballock and his assistant re
moved from her stomach a large inaes of
black hair, or a dermoid cyst growth.
It measured 32 inches in length, and 5
inches in diameter, and weighed six
ponnds. Miss stone has a good chance
of recovery.
Last night Ward Lewis, the eight-year-old
eon of Mrs. Mary J. Lewis, of
Kingsley, died of scarlet fever. The
little fellow has been sick for some time
and his death was not unexpected. He
was an intelligent little boy anl his
death will be a sad blow to his widowed
mother. Quite a number of children in
the Kingsley vicinity are down with the
same disease and in a number of cases it
has proven fatal. Dr. Logan was called
yesterday afternoon to attend the little
sufferer, but he arrived too late to ren
der any assistance.
A POPULAR EXCURSION.
Hundreds of The Dalles Citizens Will
Vialt Portland Wednesday.
A careful census taken from amongst
local business men, citizens and resi
dent farmers of the adjacent country,
shows that the Dalies people will one
and all take advantage of the low rate of
$2.00 for the trip to Portland and return
on Wednesday next.
To avoid any inconvenience to intend
ing excursionists, arrangements have
been made with the O. R. & N. officials,
whereby tickets for the excursion will
be placed on sale Tuesday, August 2d, at
the O. R. & N. ticket office. All infor
mation regarding the excursion will be
b3 furnished on application to the clerk
at the Umatilla House, or from the Tel
egram representative who will be at the
Umatilla House Saturday and Tuesday,
preceding the excursion, from 10 a. m.
to 12 m. -

Chris Schwabe, of the Chronicle
force, will leave this morning for Rock
creek, near Stevenson, where a large
party of Dalles people are camping.
Chris was not only prepared to hunt
deer, but to "take" dears as well, being
provided with a kodak and several
dozen plates. He is evidently deter
mined Cupid shall not do all the shoot
ing, but intends to take a few snap shots
in return.
