If the importation of gold con tinues for any length of time or as sumes an aspect of permanency it will discourage those speculative American citizens who have been putting their capital into gold dollars and hoarding them to get the com fortable premium which a free-silver victory would put upon the yellow metal. The pecuniary interest of these speculators upon the life and death of the nation, are, however, of small consequence as corapaied with the prosperity which a relaxation of the currency would testore to ninety- S nine per cent of the American people A COINAGE QBEES. Isnrl on Postal Card, by .J. G. Kennett & Co., lMttebure FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1896 GOLD IMPORTATIONS. 'The Telegram finds cause for con gratulation in the reported return movement in gold. Whether it means a permanent cessation of reserve-raiding or is a mere spasmodic speculative effort, it indicates a baf fling ot tbe. plans of those who would sacrifice the nation's credit for pri Y&te gain, and it also reflects a feel ing of confidence in the world of .finance that the free-silver madness is already beaten. The recent heavy withdrawals of gold from this coun try were undoubtedly prompted by the belief that the metal would com mand a handsome "profit if the plans of the silver monometalists should ucceed, and the inflow of gold rc ported yesterday may therefore fce accepted as evidence that those who were ready to traffic in the coun try's misfortunes have abandoned hope ot a free-silver victory at the coming election. The results of a rapid reverse movement of gold shipments would le of vast benefit just now. There would be a speedy relaxation in the media of exchange and a consequent stimulation of all channels of com merce and industry. The orocess of currency contraction which has been ia steady progress in this country daring the last three years, and which was created and kept alive by the in- trodaction of free coinage as an act ual living issue ia our politics, is the .source oi a large snare or ail our misfortunes. This contraction con aista only to a small extent m actual money. The withdrawal of gold from circulation is a mere . bagatelle compared with the contraction of credit money checks, drafts and other substitutes for currency which it involves. This paper is the real circulating medium of the country, and is so vast in its amount and so flexible in its adaptation to the de mands of trade-that any interference with it is most dangerous to the ' in . dustrial health, because it responds with he utmost sensitiveness to con ficlencc and doubt. The dollar of gold which is shipped to Europe is a mere nothing in comparison with the thousands of dollars of credit paper which that one dollar represents and can support, but which will not be circulated failing the existence of aolid basis of redemption. It is this credit money which has been con iracieci ana contracting ever since asvm. it is this movement that is the source of our deepest troubles. and that can be remedied only by If a dollar be a dollar honest coin without deceit one may . melt it, one may smelt it, bat its vaiae won't re treat. - Melt ten do.'lare silver douarain nnbiased . melting pot, and the silver 'slug" resulting, only sells for "five the lot." Melt gold dollars melt an eagle in aforesaid melting pet and the golden 'slug" resulting quickly sells for "ten the lot." Will you tell me kindly tell me bow tbe9e dollars equal lire if a little glowing furnace pats on only one a scar? There was never yet eqaation that demanded legislation to establish rigbt to be ; an eqaation is equation else is it a fallacy ! And I'm thinking quietly thinking that a poor man has poor eense if be vote to have a dollar that will melt to fifty cents.
