JUNE 29. 1896 THE GOLD STANDARD. The fact cannot be too often re peated that the declaration of the Republican party in favor of the gold standard simply means the maintenance of a fling that already exists. It is the free silver people, say 8 the Globe Democrat, who pro pose to make a change and establish a new standard. They arc against the present currency system, and anxious to substitute for ii one un der -which a different kind of money would be used for the payment of debts and wages ' and the transaction of the country's business. The Re publicans believe in keeping things as they are in that respect. That is to say, they hold that we now have sound and satisfactory money, and that it would be foolish and dis astrous to throw away this advan tage. It is not proposed to eliminate silver from the currency and prevent its use for commercial purposes, but only to so limit the amount of it that it can circulate freely at par with gold. Any intelligent voter can readily comprehend the distinction and the reason for making it. AVe have absorbed as much silver as we can carry with safety, and the Re publicans are opposed to an increase of it that would inevitably unsettle alues, depreciate the currency, and force us at an inferior standard. It is not true, as the free silver orators practically assert, that the Republican party is seeking to make gold the only form of money in the country. On the contrary, it mere ly insists that other forms of money shall be kept as good as gold. There should be no objection to that from any man who has the prosperity and welfare of the country at heart. There cannot be two standards of value at the same time, and the Re publicans contend that the one which now exists, and which is known to be safe, should not be ex changed for ore that would be un safe and in every way mischievous. The silver element now in the cur rency is freely accepted because it is on a parity with gold, and the Re publicans wish to continue it in ser Tice on that basis; but they are against the free and unlimited coin age of it because that would dcstioy the parity and flood the country with a depreciated circulation. It is not a question of dispensing with the use of silver, but of adapting the volume of it to the conditions which govern its value. The limit of safety in the coinage of such money .has been reached, and the Republican party says that we should have no more of it when the result would certainly be a stupendous - misfortune. That is what is meant, and all that is meant, by the maintenance of a gold stand ard. . Belva Hogue's Bedy Found. About midday Saturday Louis Neil, who bad made a trip to bis ranch, which ia situated some six and one-half miles down the river, found the body of young . Belva Hogue, who was drowned on Tuesday, Jane 16, near the water's edge, in a very decomposed state. He lifted the body from the river and immediately procured a vehicle and had it conveyed to the morgue. The boy cannot be recognized and the mother, though some what relieved at his body having been "fa Second Street. recovered, refuses to be fully reconciled. Pendle ton Tribune. Delicate Surgical Operation. Last week Dr. Pilkington performed the most delicate operation known in surgery. The operation consisted of cut ting open Lee Perrin's eye ball and ex tracting the lens and also clearing oat a comparatively large pus abcesa in inter ior of eye. The trouble was caused by a piece of exploding gun cap some 5 weeks ago, and was aggravated by another ac cident which occured daring his sleep. Dr. Pilkington did not expect the opera tion to restore sight, but did it with the hope of saving the other eye which wb threatened with sympathetic trouble, also to relieve the agonizing -pain. The good eye is new out of danger, the pain has all gone, and there is some prospect for a very dim sight in the affected eye. Dr. Pilkington was helped by Dr. A Witham, of Grass Valley, who adminis tered the anaesthetic. Antelope Herald. THREW HIS CRUTCHES AWAY. Eoglnetr W. Hayes, of the So a therm Pa cific Cared. Mr. Editor, Dear Sir: I hold it to be a duty, as well as a pleasure, to make known through the press that which of all other things is essential to most, viz : The way to cure pain and sickness. From December 1st to the 29th I was confined to my house with sciatic rheu matism, kidney trouble and inflamma tion of the neck and bladder and general indisposition. Could not sleep more titan an hour at a time. AH means I tried proved una vailing. I was prompted to visit Dr. Darrin through the advice of my friends who bad been cured by him, though I must say I had little faith that electricity would cure me. I came to the doctor on crutches. Two weeks' treatment has cured me, so I've thrown away my crutches and my other com plaints have all disappeared, so I can now take command of my engine again. W. Hayes, 914 fifth street, East Portland, Or. Dr. Darrin is now located at the Uma tilla bouse, The Dalles, and will remain until July 3d. . jun29-d3t-wlt SlOO Reward SIOO.
