Manager McNeill, in conversation
with an Oregonian reporter, says he is
friendly to opening the Columbia, but
that he does not believe the Smith bill,
providing for using a portion of the O.
R. & N. as a portage road around the
Celilo-Dalles rapids, is a good move.
He thinks it will interfere with getting
appropriations for the boat railway, and
also that the bill is unconstitutional.
The case against Landis was tried yes
terday before Recorder Dufur, and a jury.
Defendant was charged with disturbing
the peace. Mr. Bert. Phelps appeared
for the prosecution and N. H. Gates for
the defense, and the battle was a spirited
one. The jury retired to consider the
case, but failed to agree, and so passed
the night in the council chambers. This
morning still being dis-agreeable, the
whole lot of them was discharged, and
the case continued until the 25th inst.

This One Likes Coon.
Editor Chronicle : I saw a notice in
the Oregonian of the 27th of Feb.,
wherein E. L. Smith of Hood River i8
quoted as saying that he is one of many
republicans of Wasco county, who re
grets the defeat of Senator Dolph, and
says also "that it will be some years be
fore Wasco county sends another Coon to
the legislature."
Now I think it would be well for Mr.
Smith to leave Coon out, as he has made
a clean, conscientious representative, a
man who was always at his post, and
voted and worked for every measure
that was for the interest of Wasco county
or any portion thereof. It rather hard
to be knocked out by a Coon, but time
will tell whether the people of Wasco
county will want any more Coon or not.
