flow ihe Knowledge of Mixing Metals
".Vas i lrst OtMalneA.
There is a papyrus .which gices rec
ipes for various alloys used in the
manufacture' oienps and vases, and
making g-old and silver ink, for pUding
and silvering-, and for testing1 the pur
ity of precious metals. Other recipes,
says the Edinbnrg-h: Re view,-teach the
method of falsifying-' them by adding
baser metals an operation called
diplosis, or doubling, for the mass of
the gold and silver was doubled, while
their color remained nncbaujed, and,
as the compiler ol tbe : manual re
marks, a skilled workman would find
it difficult, or even impossible, to de
tect the fraud. The recipes which re
cur most frequently describe various
modes of " preparing asem, a wora
which originally meant a natural al
loy of gold and silver-known to the
Greeks as eleotrum. It was- at first
looked upon us a distinct metal, was
considered sacred to Jupiter, and was
designated by the sign tf that planet,
but at a later pesiod the name was ap
plied to all alloys, and M.- Berthelot
remarks that in this fact seems to lie
the explanation of ' the . origin of
alchemy. Both, gold and silver could
be extracted from genuine asem, and
it seemed as though it could be
changed at the will of the operator
into either one or the other; it .could
also be made artificially by mingling
gold and silver, or closely imitated by
some of the numerous alloys, eleven or
twelve varieties of which are described
in the papyrus of Leyden.
A Terrible Jtevenge.
An Italian who had a pair of showy
black eyes and was excessively vain of
them permitted himself in a peculiarly
Outrageous manner to insult a defense
less young, Englishwoman who had re
cently lost her husband. An American
painter slapped his face and received
his challenge. In the art of fence the
American was a proficient, and, as
swords were chosen, I asked him,
writes Henry Ilarland in the Idler, on
the night before the meeting what, he
was gomg.to do with the little beast.
"Xot kill him?" '"Oh, no, I shan't kill
him.' I don't!, want to soil my hands
with, his dirty little, life. I think I'll
just put out one of his handsome black
eyes." The ' next morning in a wood
near Viroflay the men crossed their
swords, made a few feints and passes,
and then, before they had been at it a
full half minute, the Italian gave a
scream. Sure chough, the American
had pinked him in the eye.

SLAVES IN NEW ENGLAND.
Tbe Beginning nf Traffic In Human Obat-
tela -in the Kastern .States.
. in the sixteenth century the system
of slavery was fast disappearing from
western Europe -as toelrrg 3nensistent
with their duty for Christians to hold
Christians as slaves. But thlsnjharity
did not extend to heathens and infi
dels! In the latter part of therseven
teenth eentury the African slave trade
was considered the most jprdfitable
part of British commerce- New Eng
land naturally ; followed the lead Wf
older countries, and her exchange for
.humanity; of rum, molasses and. other
commodities acceptable on tbe Guinea
and Gold coasts began.
In 1638, says Harper Magazine,
Samuel Maverack, , Massachusetts,
bought Af f icar. slaves, and in 1C50 "a
neager saayde 25" appears in an in
ventory m Hartford. Ere lopg every
well-to-do family had its quota of ne
groes for necessary, domestic service
and labor on the "plantation" of the
northern agriculturist, not in large
numbers, as later, on the cotton-plantations
of the south, but one or two, or
even seven or eight in a family.
The slaves imported were of various
colors, tribes and physiognomies.
Some were jet black, with features ap
proaching those of the European; some
were of a tawny yellow, ' with ' flat
noses ajad projecting jaws. These lat
ter, coming from the delta of the
Niger, were noted for an indomitable
capacity for endurance, and therefore
esteemed the best -slaves. A few were
Mohammedans, among whom were oc
casionally found persons of some ed'9'
cation, who knew Arabic and could
read the Koran. But the great mass
were pagans, in a condition of gross
barbarism.
