they're the smallest, and the easiest
to take. They're tiny, sugar-coated
anti-bilious granules, scarcely larger

Then, after they're taken, instead
of disturbing and shocking the sys

natural way. There's no chance for
any reaction afterward. Their help

' They're put up in glass vials,

THE FLYING FISH.
Some Interesting J'acts Concerning 'This
- Curious Creature '
A very common error made in
natural : histories, where this fish is
mentioned is that it does not fly. "Its
supposed flight is nothing1 more than a
prolonged leap; it cannot deviate from
a straight line, and cannot rise a
second time without entering the
water." This, briefly, is the sort of
thing one meets with in textboo'ks
where reference is made to this fish.
The simplest way of dealing with it
is the professor's method of answering
the query of the French academy
whether their definition of a crab was
correct. The story is so well known
that it does not need repetitions " As
the result of personal observation ex
tending over a' good many years, I
assert that the exocetus does fly.
I have often seen, says a writer in
Chambers' Magazine, a flying fish rise
two hundred yards off, describe a
semi-circle, and,- meeting the ship,
rise twenty feet in the air perpendicularly-,
at the Same time darting off at
right angles to its previous course.
Then, after another long flight, when
just about to enter the water, the gap
ing jaws of a dolphin emerging from the
sea Grave it pause and it rose again, re
turning almost directly upon its former
course. This procedure is so common
that it is a marvel it is not more wide
ly known. 1 - '
A flying fish of mature size can fly a
thousand .yards. It does not flap its
fins as a bird, but they vibrate, like
the wings of an insect, with a distinct
hum. The only thing which termi
nates its flight involuntarily is the dry
ing of its fin membranes and their con
sequent stiffening.

Motto or the Founder of tbe English

Those who have read "Todd's Stu

a world of physical and moral good to

the value of doing small deeds. lie de

Peu a peu, "little by little."
The great financier who founded the'
English branch of the famous Roths
child firm of bankers worked upon the
lines marked out by this coat of arms.
Among .his "clients" was one of the
"chosen people," a young broker. One
day the business he- had to transact
was on so small a scale that he took it
to a less famous house.
. Rothschild soon heard of the trans
action he had, a way of hearing of
everything done on 'change-r-and when
next he met the broker, he rebuked
him for not coming to the house of
Rothschild.
"Oh, sir," answered the broker, "I
thought a matter of eighteen pence too
small to bring to your house."
"Ah. but bishness is bishness," re
plied the great banker.
..Mrs. " Rothschild thought with her
husband. She was generally in the
counting room, keeping the books, and
wearing two watches, displayed at the
waist, according to the then ostenta
tious fashion. . .,

' Gold La Ireland- '
All authorities agree in stating that
the ancient inhabitants of Ireland
must have been very familiar with gold
and well accustomed to its use. Native
gold occurs in geological deposits in
many parts of Ireland. Until lately
the gold mines of Wicklow were the
most productive of the British Isles,
and besides this there are six other
known gold-producing localities. An
trim, Derry, Tyrone, Kildare, - Dublin
and Wexford. It is probable, however,
that many of the earlier auriferous de
posits have been -worked out or are un
known. It is a fact that no country
in Europe possesses so much manufac
tured gold belonging to early ages as
Ireland. In the. museum of the Royal
Irish academy alone there are nearly
four hundred specimens of Irish gold
antiques". The gold antiquities in the
British museum illustrative of British
history are, without exception, Irish.
The museum of Trinity college, Dub
lin, contains many fine examples, and
there are several large private collec
tions. But there is no doubt that
much greater quantities of gold orna
ment than are now known, as existing
have been lost forever.
Duties of the French Academy.
The Academie Francaise was founded
by Cardinal Richelieu in 1C35, lived
long enough to snub Corneille and Mo
liere, was abolished in 1793, was re
vived two years later and made a use
ful body by Napoleon in 180S. Since
then it has been a part of the Institute
of France. It elects its own members,
who are now known as the Forty Im
mortals. Its duties are to preserve the
purity of the French language, to en
courage and preserve French literature
and to distribute several queer prizes,
such, for instance, as .two thousand
dollars each year to that member of
the working class who has performed
the most virtuous action of the year,
and three hundred dollars every other
year to the rising genius who is consid
ered to be most in need of and 'most
worthy of encouragement.. The mem
bers are supposed to meet twice a
week, and are paid three dollars and
eighty-seven cents a napoleon for
every meeting they attend. They re
ceive, besides, a salary of three hun
dred and sixty dollars a year. Zola,
who has been rejected some six or
seven times, holds to the tradition that
membership in the academy is the
highest literary honor that can be
bestowed upon a Frenchman.
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh that
Contain Mercury,
As mercury will surely destroy tbe sense
of smell and completely derange the
whole system when entering it through
the mucous surfaces. Such articles
should never be used except on pre
scriptions from reputable physicians, as
the damage they will do is ten-fold to
the good you can possibly derive from
them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufac
tured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O.,
contains no mercury, and is taken in
ternally, acting directly upon the blood
and mucous surfaces of tbe system. In
buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you
get the genuine. It is taken internally,
and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J.

UNFIT FOR OFFICE.
Disqualification of a Former Candidate far
Kentucky's Gubernatorial Chair.
A former governor of Kentucky used
to tell some good stories about his ex
periences in canvassing, the state pre
vious to his election to that office
One day he stopped at a small weather
beaten ho3c about noon, and the mis
tress of the place brought forth for his
delectation a huckleberry, pi of gen
erovis dimensions and most excellent
taste.
"Why, madam," said the would-be
governor, after he had taken a few
mouthf uls with evident relish, "this is
really a most delicious pie. And may I
ask what the fruit is which has such a
pleasant flavor?"
"Sho, now," said the woman, beam
ing -with gratification, "I reckon you
don't need to ask me that! I reckon
you know what's in that pie, without
me tellin' you." '
'.'Indeed, I must plead ignorance,"
replied the guest; "the taste is unfa
miliar to me."
; Weill, I declare!" ejaculated the
woman; "don't you raise huckleberries
in your part o' the kentry? Ain't you
acquainted with 'era?"
"It may be," replied - her guest,
smiling, "but 'I have never eaten' a
huckleberry pie before."
"Well," she said, in evident amaze
ment, "I dnnno about you! TJp for gov
ernor, and don't know huckleberries!
I mistrust you aint fitten for office."
-. And with a dubious shake of- her
head .ghe cut a second quarter of the
pie for the disqualified candidate.
