T-iirlur' limtltutf.
Hum Ktvr.ii, Aup. !, 1801!.
The institute is daily giowinc in num
bers, interest ami enthusiasm. Since
the oppressive lieat of Monday, the
weather lias Ikhmi very favorable to the
work, and both instructor.- ami classes
are nt hard, honest and eilieient work
which will bo manifest in many ,'chools
during the ensuing year. .o teacher
can oflbrd to 1h- absent. Some come
down on the boat in the morning and
leave :n the afternoon each day. Thee
lose a part of the instruction.
The attendance of teachers is the larg
est that hat over been in this county,
the enrollment being ilfty-four.
The excursion question was very
quickly settled by an almost unanimous
vote to visit the Cascade Locks. The
oflicersofithe Regulator would do well
to make up their minds to an uncondi
tional surrender when they land here
next .Saturday morning. It might be
well for themjtot to visit many interior
pastures and orchards on the way down
to this ioint. Wild teachers and wide
lunch baskets will require much of their
spare room.
The entertainment last evening was
very pleasant, interesting and full of in
struction. The music was excellent;
the recitations of the young Indies re
ceived the warm approval of the packed
audience; and the orator Prof. 1'. L.
Campbell, of the Monmouth Normal
school, lost none of his well-earned
reputation as a brilliant, instructive
speaker. The only departure from the
programe published was two solos ; the
first by Dr. Brosius, who sang, "A
Dream of Love ;" the second by S. K.
Bartmess, who sang "Nearer My Gcd to
Thee," instead of the "Skating Glee."
The teachers were evidently on their
good behavior after the arrival of Deputy
Jackson.
The irtodt of Ihe gentlemen immediately
entered a sailboat and sailed out on to
the heaving Columbia. A remarkable
rock was descried, and Sunt. Shelley
started out on a simile designed to awe
us by its grandeur, but was promptly
silenced by the matter-of-fact boatman
saying, "It looks like the hind end of a
covered wagon."
The ladies havo reported the finding
of nothing more important than an ice
cream parlor. It was painful to see the
look of dullness on the face of gentlemen
when informed of this.

Tho Gate City of tho Inland Empire is situated at tho head
of navigation on the Middle Columbia, and is a thriving, pros
perous city.
ITS TERRITORY.
It is the supply city for an extensive and rich agricultural
and grazing country, its trade reaching as far south as Summer
Lake, a distance of over two hundred miles.
The Largest "Wool Market.
The rich grazing country along the eastern slope of the Can
cades furnishes pasture for thousands of sheep, tho wool from
which finds market here.
Tho Dalles is the largest original wool shipping point in
America, about 5,000,000 pounds being shipped last year.
ITS PRODUCTS.
The salmon fisheries are the finest on the Columbia, yielding
this year a revenue of thousands of dollars, which will m mom
than doubled in tho near future.
The products of the lwautiful Klickitat valley find market
here, and tho country south and east has tin's year filled tho
warehouses, and all available storage places to overflowing with
their products.
ITS WEALTH.
It is tho richest city of its size on the coast and its money is
scattered over and is being used to develop more farming country
than is tributary to any other city in Eastern Oregon.
Its situation is unsurpassed. Its climate delightful. Its pos
sibilities incalculable. Its resources unlimited. And on theao
oornor stones she stands.
