Parent-Teachers
Protest Against
Reckless Drivers
The death of ore pedestrian and the
injuring of three others along Foster
road, between 52d end 7 2d streets, in
the last 10 days have aroused the
Parent-Teacher associations of Arleta
and Creston schools to consternation
and caused them to make strong ap
peals to the police.
Foster road was paved only recently
along this stretch and only one side
of the road has been opened. The as
sociations complain that drivers along
this road seem particularly reckless,
and that no one is safe in alighting
from a street car or crossing the street.
Fears are felt that school children will
yet be among the victims.
The intersection -of Foster road,
Powell valley road and 50th is said to
be particularly bad.

Introduction of a joint resolution by

General Taylor of "the army engi

on cost of dredging, which he thinks
probably wijt be " considerably tinder
$300,000. - fi
Announcement by Representative

has secured ' this estimate, which he
believes should be the basis f the
action requested.
New appeals from Astoria and other
points in Oregon for a new appropri

base as a means for providing work
for the unemployed: -
Statement by Representative-- McAr
thur that no : new appropriation for
Tongue Point may be expected, even
though the senate puts an amendment
on the navy bill for it because of ad
verse attitude of navy and budget
departments and appropriations . com
mittee of the hduae.
Announcement by Senator McNary
that he proposes to submit a request
for the Tongue Point money .direct to
General Lord, director of the budget,
in a forlorn hope that lie may agree
to recommend It-
"1 want to be frank about the mat
ter," said McArthur, "and the truth
is that -we have no chance to secure
additional appropriations lor Tongue
Point until the nnused appropriation is
apent or nearty spent. Of the $250,000
heretofore appropriated only $10,000 or
$12,000 has been spent. Our ont chance
to secure help for Astoria is in the
way of funds for dredging. This I am
hopeful we can secure,"
