By l. C- Hey I " (Copyright. 1922. by The Journal) New York. Nov. 28. Buying, not baseball or poker, i the groat American game, and merchants in tnaHtering circle declared today larger cities were over ioiavinst a good hand while those of the rural districts were "A t lem facing retailers is hare .money to spend playing a poor hand. Aa a re sult badness conditions in the cities are some, what spotty. - High wage and nni Tersavl employment have aot led to a repititioa of the extravagant buy ing of 1919. mer chants declared, but they have encouraged .unbalanced baying in certain lines. Goods with a spectacular ap peal have taken prece dence in many in stances over the stable articles, and the prob not whether customers but whether they know how to spend it so that thy can continue to be customers. Many Oeods Bought for Shear There 7 undoubtedly is a tendency on the pert of some shoppers to buy for show rather titan use. This is shows by the fact that wuiie " high priced suits and overcoat are in demand, low-priced shirts and underwear are being bought by the same customers. Another evidence of the tendency is seen in the call for the heeresc of chiffon hose. A sales woman in a local department store outlined the wearing Qualities of these goods to a customer today when she said: "It's all matter of ruck, dearie. Ton may be able to wear a pair of these hose at 35 once or they may last you two weeks." .As a consequence of this trend, business in some of the more staple line is slack in various cities but the merchants are confident tliis will correct itself aa the season goes on. They declare thu.t the sight of shopgirls wading through snow banks in red velvet purnpa and transparent stockings will bring a return to couimon sense apparel. Farmers Have Paid Debts Farmers on the contrary have paid their debts and while they have not had an extra ordinary amount of money to spend they have bought carefully and consistently and are ex pected to continue to do so throughout the winter. It is estimated that if prices for farm product suffer no further decreases, agriculturists will have approximately two bil lion dollars more to spend from the return of this yesr's crops. This additional buying power ia expected by merchants to be evenly distributed throughout the wnter and spring nd will be expended in farm machinery, seeds, nursery stocks, labor-saving devices and house hold goods aa well a clothing and other eom-i modities. Bulck Price May Rise There is a well-defined impression among Buic.k automobile dealers throughout the coun try that prices for Buick cars will be advanced from 8100 to. $150, according to the gnodels involved, at or immediately after the New Tork automobile show. Packard, Chevrolet and Dodge dealers have, experienced unusual sales as well as the Buick company, and each of thece factories is operating at high rat ot production, Chevrolet is approaching an out pot of 1250 ears a day; Packard is turning out 2000 cars a month and Dodge Brothers are finishing 600 a day. ' All these companies will store large num bers -of cars for spring, it is ssserted from factory headquarters, in the belief that demand will be undiminished and raw materials will not be loner. Ford Open Fewer Plant Another step in the program to ' make tbe Ford company as near independent .of outside producers as passible has been taken in the opening of a paper plant at Uiver Rogue which will use scrap wood from the body plant to turn out such paper as is needed by the Ford company. Bluestem "wheat has reached the high point of tbe season in Portland. Or., where 81.60 a bushel for No. 1 milling grade has been paid. Flour mills in various sections are operating at frogn 75 to 80 per cent of ca pacity and stock in dealers' hands are low. f 1 - FOEEIGX EXCHANGE KATES Corrected daily by the foreign exchange de partment of the United States National hank.
