BORAH PREDICTS RESTORATION OF; IDAHO PRIMARY correspondent and Portland visitor. Major Powell was; for three Tears with the armies of the allies as a representa tive of the New. York World, the CM- I cagro- Tribune and :the London-' I Jsuly MaiLv Upon -America's, entry: Into the wr he, became assistant vhief of staff of the Ninety-first -(Wild West) divi sion. United States aarror. and later was a staff and liaison officer with the A. E. F. until jthe signing of the armistice.' ' f t CopTTiht. 1922. by United Press) ' ' . Washington. Oct. 23. Victory for the direct primary over the organised op position of Republican, party "regu lars" was predicted today by Senator Borah. Idaho, who is In his home state fighting for restoration ofe the primary, knocked out by the G. O. P. organiza tion after Borshs last election, to the senate ' Instead of being foroed- out of the j Republican party nyitne nosumy ox the regular organization in Idaho, Borah declared in a telegram to the United Pisa, sent from his home in Boise, that " "the forcing out will be the other way." That is.' if any one is ousted frm Republican ranks it will be the 8tatcommittee who are fight ing Borah. The direct primary fight looks fine," Borah ' wired. "I have no doubt the n-t legislature wilt pass a direct pri mary law and the governor, whoever he is, will sign it. The action of the state organization is .not affecting my party relationship in any way. The forcing out wHI be the other way. - "I think you can depend on it that so far as the direct primary fight, is concerned we will attain our object Iti t'ais state. The Republican .national committeeman came out in a declara rafin for it yesterday and- daily condi lates for the legislature are declaring for it." ' - The Idaho situation has beenf gen erally overlooked by the political 'Idope, sters" this year because no important senatorial or congressional contests oJ eur there. But- in some respects, sis party leaders realized long ago, the idaho camaaigTi is even more signifi cant than some o"f the more spectacu lar, fights. It marks an effort by Borah's enente- . mi,es' to force him out of public life or' at least out of the Republican party. Little Mary ' lien MacDonald. who a few short morHhs ago set two continents to dis cussing the "ghost of Antigonlsh," sat today in solitary confinement at the Nova Scotia hospital for the insane at' Dartmouth, looking out over the blue waters if the ocean. . She- has been spending all her days "thus since her confinement to the in stitution, where the physicians say ;he should have been committed fully two years ago. Mary Ellen shows no desire to be in the company of other persons, and seems perfectly satis fied with life as she finds it. There is a chance, - the physicians say, that the ghost girl may develop into a normal woman, but the proba bilities are against it. It is more than likely, tney contend, that she will spend the remainder of her days in the asylum. (Jalifomian ! nurline 1 nnP'fwklllujk Tudorstar Robin Adair. . . . COURT HEFPSES .JTt REVIEW PAGE CASE Washington. Oct. 23. U. P.) The supreme court today refused to review the lower court action dismissing a 708,000 damage suit brought by Page Brothers, Sanj Francfseo ship brokers, against tha American-Hawaiian Steamship company, alleging breaeh of contract. The suit grew out of a transaction in which Page Brothers chartered the steamer Florioan for two round trips form San Francisco to the Orient in 1916. After the original contract had been Bigned, a dispute arose over guarantees to be given the owner of the vessel. This resulted in a can cellation by Page Brothers and the charge - that t;he shipping concern did not fulfill its bargain. 170 mile anath of Flattery.
