Became of th fact that the entire country is rushing its irattur to Sn FrsrH-isco with the extreme priee there in effect, the California trade to lightly ererlneded. ' Opinion of the trade here differ somewhat retarding the output. Receipts of erraaa are r aaid to be the greatest known for a Monday ; for several months, a condition natural! re fleeted in the output. Some of the Mr cream eriee report their output a just about hokUn it own. indicating that the increase ia seat teredf among some of the smaDer plants which - mas he bidding a fractional premium. While some of the storage interests continue to talk foolishly regarding a probable advance for batter here within the smsnediate future. ' others are quite willing to make the public bebere that the market is steady. The present i situation reflect more of storage activity than -any special desire to push the fresh product. 'Review of the butter market at San Fran J Cisco for the week ending Friday: : ' The highest price for the year at San Fran cisco was reached dnring the peat week when 02 score butter sold at 58 He. The steady i increase in prices during the past few weeks i censed a gradual decrease in consumptive de , mand and attracted butter from as fsr east : as Chicago. The result was that although . production of fancy butter was" light, dealers . began to have a slight surplus. ' Following the holiday Thursday, larger receivers sold freely in order to keep their floors cleared, feeling that with prospects of an early season and pos sable arrival of Australian butter, prices were dueto fall considerably. The lack of eonft- " denee in the market was general and prices declined He Friday, with further declines ex pected next week. Receipt during the week include csrlot shipments frrn North Dakota. Idaho, Minnesota and heavy arrivals by boat - from Oregon and" Washington. The market ciosed weak with 92 score at 52 Vc the same as the Lna Angeles market. This price is - -74e higher than New 1'ork and 914, e above Chicago. Review of the butter market at New Tork, Boston, 'Chicago and Philadelphia for the week: After many weeks of firm markets with steady advances, the Eastern markets during the current week developed certain amount of easiness. New York, having attracted a larger portion of the receipts by relatively - higher prices, felt the easiness first. The easier tone owne after the markets were ad i veneed ' because of generally bulli"h prelimi nary report. The higher prices shut off the demand and this, coupled with at least no further ' decrease in receipts, plsced operators on a much more conservative basis. All grades were harder to move, in fact accumulations at Philadelphia resulted in a decline of a cent on top scores. Chicago 92 score was advanced- He. but Jots was because the Chi . : cago price was below the normal level com- ; parea witn toe otner markets; otherwise line butter cleaned up at barely steady prices. ; Medium grades on all markets and fresh cars - of "eentrsliied" at Oiicago found slowest de i mand. Cndergradet were generally well cleaned up with some -advances being registered. Stor age butter wasin lighter demand and prices . were lower. The storage movement was also lighter. BASKET Those desiring special information regarding any market should write the Commercial Editor, Oregon Journal, inclosing stamp for reply. EG SITUATION' 8TEABI HERE Market for eggs is showing a steady tone locally especially for fresh .stock. In fact really fresh -eggs are very scarce with premiums or i to Jc -a dozen occasionally reported in the buying price. - POTATO MARKETS REMAIN SLACK ery slack trade continues in the potato market. Local supplies are coming forward, but are finding hard sledding in the sale because of the lack of proper grading. PRICE OF HAMS IS tIFTED CENT As soon as the public is taught to pur chase hams at trie, favorable prices, higher values are quoted. Another rise of le was announced by local packers. No change in bacon, but lard is up a cent. By Hyp Ass HV CofeCaV '. " ( Consumers ; would . make . no mistake In burlnc' their immediate - require ment of flour." Even 'at , UI time some of the cash at carry atorea are gelling: at iretail lower than the whole sale price. The chances are excellent for an early advance in the price. Marketai areeomewhat better sup plied with! fresh harbut and the price is fractionally loww at Zbc a pound for No. 1. Chinook salmon remains very scarce but silversldes are in good supply around 12 He a pound. . New crop riots are arriving: in - bet ter supply and the quality of the Oregon product cannot be beat- It looks like a slight advance in the price 'of onions at retail following a rise at wholesale. Oregon stock will keep-much better than either the Cali fornia, or Yakima offerings. They are not quite so large but have, better flavor. f ': Don't buy eggs. Nvman M -Talk of' a serious decrease in the Oregon prune output as compared with the earlier ex pectations is act st all borne out by a careful cheek of the situation made during the last jssjia.j t While in spots the output was below the earlier forecasts of " the growers as well as the trade, the sggregste production net okly held up to the full estimate of at least 4S.00O.OO0 to 50.000.000 pounds, but whew final returns are available there may be a .surprise in store for those who are now talking of decreased output,- 'i. ; ! , . It is true thst considerable of the crop was not yet dried because of various conditions, but chief among these was the fsct thst the errs? was. so enormous that drying facilities have been generally taxed. The extent of the prwie crop sf Oregott ia indicated quite, clearly b the absence of sny large pereentsge of big sised fruit this seasn This sppesrs Just the reverse of the situation in Clarke count?, where sizes are the best in years, - Business in prunes continues of bend to mouth character, with no special disposition on the part of Atlantic' coast buyers to stock up. Efforts are still being made by the coast associations to force business at current val ues, but BtUe ia accoraplishd as yet. Claims Smaller Output California Packing corporation reports its view of the situation as follows: ' . "The Oregon Italian prune crop is looking much smaller, both aa to sise of frost and ton nage, than exrweted. The Rose be r section renorta contract estimates will be at least. 20 ner cent abort and Salem eays that all de liveries from growers are falling below eon tract tonnage. From present reports it looks as if the Northwest crop will be leas than 25.000 tons instead of 3O.000 to 34.000. as many had anticipated. We are not inclined to sell any 80-40 Italians at any price and we think it safe to loo for some pro rats deliveries' on 30-40s from the early free sellers. The California prune position ii tightening also and, we 'do not think anyone today esti mates over 100.000 tons for the state. Busi ness far the past 10 days has been particularly Lbrisk, most buyers nrging Quick shipment and toe impression apparently prevails anions who are lust twiw buying that they can get sny shipment they desire. A number have bwn disappointed aad instead of receiving a prom ise for first week of October the best they got' was all October and then provided the car shortage does not interfere. Early Delivery at Premium Premiums of ( He sre now proCHrabJe for esrly delivery and this sppHea to seedleseX rais ins as well as prunes, evaporated apples and apricots. The car shortage is really serious and the railroads reported yesterday that on fresh grspe requisitions alone they were 1000 cats short between Santa Barbara and San Francisco. The character of the business the past week. ' which is daily increasing, evidences beyond question that we underea-. timated the number of buyers who had not yet purchased futures. Taking the country and Canada as a whole, buyers on the average have protected less than 25 per cent of their fall requirements in dried frufts, instead of 30 to 49 per cent as formerly estimated. In the face of this. California sales tonnage on futures is materially greater1 than it was last year at thia time. The difference is undoubt edly taken up in the slack between wholesal ers and retailers' present bare stocks as com pared to their normal fall supplies at this time of the year." Very excited market for wheat was shown for . the week's opening, options being sharply higher at practically all leading -world's -centers. This- confirms in full recent forecasts made by The Journal that European buying would soon show a liberal splurge. Chicago started with a very excited advance for wheat options. Some of this was lost quickly, but later recovery of a portion of the loss was shown, Liverpool end Buenos Aires were perhaps the most excited during the day. IJverpooi options for , wheat opened 1 d higher than Saturday and, closed with net ad vances of 1 si d to 2HL At Buenos Aires the option msrket was lc to 2c s bushel higher at the opening. Chicago showed its excitement in forcing the December over the May. Cash markets were in lewd of the option markets. At Pacific Northwest points there was excited bidding by both millers and ex porters. Crab wheat advanced to a new high of $1.16 per busliel early in the day, although some of the exporters claimed they bad suffi cient to take care of their tonnage. Milling wheats are somewhat more active st $1.80 for Big Bend bluestem. although holders are showing less disposition to accept this ex txeme. SHARP IN ONION TRADE Onion market prices are showing unexpected excitement in the local trade. Values are not only firui.- but sliarply higher, a condition that would not have been believed possible a few weeks ago. So liberal haa become the demand for -superior quality Oregon onions that purchases of No. 1 stock at country points in carload lots are confirmed as high as $1.10 91.25 'per cental, advances of 15 to 25c above previous figures. Along Front street the advances have been fully 25 to 35c per cental with general sales of top Oregon quality at $1.5091.75 per cental. , While Yakima stock of . doubtful keeping quality but of large sixe is being offered to the trade here at less than $1 landed and two loads were reported in from there during the week's opening, the demand is . princiiwlly for Oregon .stock, except perhaps from some of the restaurants who are not loyal to this territory. Shipping orders for superior quality Oregon onions are from various' points of the Pacific -Northwest, but principally from Montana and the intennountein country. 124 162 116 -.198 117 104 . 87 North Portland livestock run showed a lib eral decrease for tbe week's opening with s total run of 82 loads compared with 124 loads a week ago, 162 the previous week and 103, loads a year ago. Hoga were generally steady, cattle Wow and sheep nominally steady with no early price changes Monday. In the bog alley! one 'oad of extra good stuff sold Monday morning at $11.10 or a rise of a dime above last week 'a final figures. This was scarcely a general market transaction, being s premium of that amount above the regular top, due to excessive quality. Very Hbersl increase in the run of hogs was shown as compared with last Monday.
