It had been indicated by some of the news reports that work oivnew proj ects might be taken up at once. "There will be no money available to spend on projects! recently au thorized, therefore, Wntli congress makes appropriations for 1 them, and old balances cannot be used for that purpose. There are in the recent bill however, a lew modifications of exist ing projects, to which . this does not apply." i EXPECTS SLIGHT DEJiAT Lieutenant Colonel pillsbury added that little actual delay will occur, aa congress will soon be in session again and is expected to pass a bill carrying appropriations for the new projects, en abling work to be started next spring or early summer, which. In most cases, Is about as early as it could be begun In any event. . The, engineers are preparing esti mates for the next year's work, which Includes all authorized projects, include In those carried in tha new bill. These estimates, go to the director of tha budget and will be submitted to congress at the beginning of the next session. Lieutenant Colonel Pillsbury reterrea to the Columbia river plan as virtually an Intensive program or the work al ready under way. Including the provid ing of a new dredge, and money win be asked for this work in the next ap propriation bill. This statement confirm the impres sion of local government engineers as quoted in The Journal that while many new projects have been authorized no SBoney would be avauaDie unui speciiic appropriation had been made by con cress. Actually getting the money ia counted only- less difficult than secur ing authorization. Postal Employes Are Now Offered Free 'Health Examination Washington, Oct. (WASHING TON BUREAU OF THE JOURNAL) Employes of th Portland and Astoria postofiices are among tnose wno, in. 67 cities, are offered . the opportunity pf'free medical examination by gov ernment physicians. Portland and Se- atfle are among the cities wnere irom one to six employes may be examined each day by relier stations or tne public health service. Astoria and Ta coma are among those where the fa cilities win enable 15 examinations a month to be made. The method followed is to make a MimBldta examination upon applica tion by the employe, who is informed what physical deficiency, lr any. is found, and whether a doctor, dentist. oculist or other specialist should be consulted.
