Ml led Security Price It was an interesting dav in the pecuntr dealings, a day of v,-ry much mixed price changes and conflicting opemtinn-. Another weak spot in tlie railroad situation was ex- posed; in the shape of a Midden collapse in Chicago (.rest Western 4 per cent bonds and. proportionately violent drop in tlie preferred and common stock!. This. Ivwerer. was tiurely at special cae, a ease nt a rad which has not been earning fixed charge during a period whfli the transvortiition industry - has had a Tury satisfactory recrvery. 'the episode did not, therefore, have murh effect upon the rest of the market. Hallway shares were rather di.- "ptwed to sag off, but there vra no open weaK- ne&a anywhere. Industrials Are Irregular Thr industrial stock were rcry irreguiir. fin the other hand, there' was another series, ot demonstration in the srmrcs of the speciait;? type 'Where there wis reason to -upect the actirity of speculative p.-wl. On the oMur hanrr,: realizinff sales brougiit about a nnd-rite reactiion in eome of the re:ent leaders and a few point of weakness cropped out, notably in the mercantile marines and in one or two of the rubber stocks, where there were special considerations of an nnwnam sort at work. Buying Rush at ClO'O Atitimes today s stork market had symptoms of considerable uncertainty. F..-pecially was "this the case in the early part of the day But iin the last half hour this hesitation was thrown aside and the market clo-ed under a rush of buying in a dozen or more individual atoeka which carried them forward from tw to four points. Pig Iron Is Affected Thiere was. no', mncn significance to the day's operation in industrial stocks except a-i it related to their individual trade conditions. The material, increase during the la.st two months in pig rron quotations affected a rea aonable backgrmind for tlie more in Iron Prod ucta, i quite apart from the intimations of a Vlan ' oil foot to retire bondi ami jtreferred atockt In stnne of the oil. .mercer talk was accountable f-r much of rhe buying. Kspectations of a dividend before the end nf ttee year furnished the motive for the rise In Tobacco I'rodncts. Kjnipment stocks held round their top prices and the Nash shares came to the front in the laAt hour. Nothing further hapjen;d in tiie steel group and the coppers and sugars were rather h. avy. Oermen-Belglum Controversy German marks .were not affected by the re port: which reached Wall street late in the aft ernoon that Belgium had sent fcn ultimatum to Germany demanding payment '.f 1 0(1 0(10.000 soldi marks in six month bonds, with cash se curity deposited in Heigian .banks. The mat tera ' of controversy betwee:L the trerman and ' Relflian retiresentii tires will now go to the repa rations, rnamission for decision. Inasmuch a.s the inain ioiiit in dispute is the length of time that! the bonds, to be put up as srrnrity are to run. it does not seem likely that the com mission will fail to effect a compromise. At 1 " Jea-st. the Belgian ultimatum, formidable a JKlt may apjiear on its face, by no means threat- ena tto break off the latest and most promising t plans for settli-ng the indemnity questions. TThe Chicago Great Western bondj and stocks 5;raJlied briskly toward tlie close. Wall Street, 5ew Tort, Sept. H-r Trading In the botvd market was fairly actlTe today. Prices in the main were firm. Tbe influence of the rate of 3 per ceBt fixed by the secretary of the treasury for the new jroternment ob ligations was still erldent bat predic tions of iVx per rent retnrn in the near future were considered premature. JUberties were all strong. The tax exempt SVis led the market in tbe up ward swine; and the first 4Vis and the 4th 4V4 were prominent. When tbe eoalminers returned to work, an adequate supply of fuel came into sight and ita move ment is being expedited aa benches in the railroad repair shops are being filled, CJoai output la expected to break all records, even thoae of the high tension days at the close of the war. A dozen or more blast furnaces have re sumed within the week and Lnishin. mill operations have increased accordingly. Steel plant with by-product ovens are making the greatest progress. Steel makers who left the market as sellers dnnng the fuel shortage I arc back again. Makers today, however, are i not pushing their products for sale, as there I is a decided feeling that higher pnees will ' prevail later.
