Storey. 23 years old, alleged bigamist and the father of a S-year-old girl, is in -the city Jail on a charge of deser tion from tb Cnlted State army and will be turned over to the federal authorities as soon as his record can .be checked. A letter was received at police head quarters from Mrs. Be mice Pauline Xane, Brae City. Mo., asking if the department could locate her husband. Uewey.; Lne, whom she last saw in February. 1920. when he enlisted In the army at a Missouri Boet. Mrs. Lane stated She wanted her husband back and asked for immediate Help In finding him as he was needed at home. On April 9. 1922. a youth trvmg the name of William A- Storey was arrested by Police Inspectors liorack and Hamrick on a charge of .forging a check for $25. The machin ery of the detective bureau! was put te motion and Detective! Lane told the whole story to the Inspector. . ' He said he was married in 1918 in Missouri and a baby girl was born to that union. Lane told the . police he tried repeatedly to get a fur lough .to go to his home, but was re fused and decided to desert In April, J321. Since that date, he said, Ihe has writ ten his wife several times and re ceived no answer. I ; Lane and Miss Thorn psott were mar ried less than two weeks ago in Van couver, Wash. According! to the po lice, a friend of Miss Thompson falsely swore before the marriage clerk that the bride was 18 years of age, while as a matter of fact she is but 16. INTENDED TO LEAVE I Lane told the police that he and bis wife would have been gonei from Port land to a new job !n Eastern Oregon within 24 hours, had he not been ar retted. . Meet ., Strenuous opposition to Japanese in vasion of Arbor Lodge district featured t a mass meeting of residents! and prop erty owners In the; neighborhood of Portland boulevard and Greeley street Monday night. The meeting waa held at Arbor Lodge hall and among the principal speakers were Elton Watkins, candidate for congress on the Demo- . cratic ticket. W. T. Vaughn, and M. F. Wright, secretary of the Oregon Federation of Fraternal societies. The meeting waa the result of a re cent sale of a home site on Portland boulevard to a Japanese aad a com mittee appointed to Investigate , the transaction reported that several other sales of property to Japanese were pre v en ted only-by strong opposition on the part of property owners in the neigh borhood. Another meeting will be held next Monday night at the same place and Watkins announced that he would speak at length on the Immigration question. ! Float Presented , To Youngsters Of Oswego Lake Oswego lake playground camp has had another gift. Warden Friend has presented the youngsters with a fine float which has been anchored lu the lake and' is used off the bathing beach. The lake camp continues to be a popu lar feature, of the summer festivities of the municipal playground , system. Scores of children have visited the lake each week. They are always ac companied by a director and, in addi tion. Jacob Etakles, who is in charge - of the camp, is en hand to teach, them ' camping practices and to .keep check on the bathers and .boating parties.
