The weak spots ; which had developed among individual Stocks in Tuesday's market did not reappear, i On . the contrary there was consideubte short cot ering in the mot--.- the rubber and. tire and other shares which had been the object of . professional attack on previous days. Mean : while the railway equipments gave a further display of strength, the steels and coppers held steady and stocks of companies stately interested in gal . and electric lighting leither equalled or surpassed their previous highs tor ' the year. I Stand Labor Uncertainties I Nothing in , the financial situation of the day equalled in point of interest this trial of the stork market's ability to stand up against the labor uncertainties. The foreign ex changes continued to decline with French franca off nearly a quarter of a cent! from where they were selling when the Condon conference began. The main interpretation of this weakness was that it reflected skepticism as to whether the German reparations amd inter-allied debt questions could be satisfactorily iwttied with such radical difference existing between the British and French point of view. Possibly there was some connection between the fail iif exchange rates and the extraordin ary showing in Tuesday's report of August crop condition. This points to an unusually abund ant surplus of wheat and corn aTailsble for ex port and the reading of the situation is that Europe will turn to the American market for a larger extent than it did last year and will consequently hate larger equipments to finance in. the exchanges. Crops Big Factors As -a matter of fact the promise of Jumper grain crops, with all that this implies for the buying power in the farming states, and the Closely related volume of railway tonnage, was more of an influence upon the market of the day than was all the alarming talk of "crLtis and catastrophe" in connection with the: trans portation strike. As the session went an, rail way stocks not only regsined what little loss they had had in the forenoon, but in a number of instances developed rather remarkable Strength. Especially was this true in the three typical roads of the Northwestern wheat terri tory Great Northern, Northern Pacific and hicago A Northwestern and of Union Pacific, which reached a new high figure for 192. Steel Not Affected With the indications still favoring the ter mination of the coal strike, even the steel shares refused to take alarm at the picture of - increasing stringency and closing down of plants which the trade journals drew in their weekly reviews of the steel industry. Bo far as current profits are concerned, such Curtail ment of output as the steel companies have suffered from the fuel shortage baa seemingly been counterbalanced by the rise' in iron and steel prices. r The market was at its best entering the final hour. Toward the close prices ; eased off somewhat following fresfan&eUina: of Mo tor and Tire stocks, but at tBe end tie list . as a whole was steady.
