11 SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1922. THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON. ' ;. M COOPERATIVE GRAIN GROWERS. CHARTER VESSEL George A. Westgate, sales manager of the "Northwest Wheat Growers' as sociation, has placed the first charter for the "farmers, the; Japanese steamship Baltimore Maru, 4013 tons, September loading of rev crop gTain. The Baltimore ilaru Is a ISuaukl boat and Is an old trader ut f this port. Her destination will ba : the United Kingdom for orders. J Chartering of offshore tonnage for full cargoes is a new departure on the part of the- wheat growers and is a de parture on the part of the cooperative grain men. While the Northwest Wheat .Growers' association has been engaged in business for some time, their sales foreign have been handled by other exporters. The addition of the Japanese liner to the en route tonnage for grain brings the list on the board at -the Merchants, Exchange vp to 10. This amount of tonnage is- represented by three exporters, the Northern Grain Ac Warehouse company, Kerr, Gifford & Co. and the Northwest Wheat Grow ers' association. Other exporters re fuse to give out charters. EAT5ASGEE WILL LOAD LUMBER 0 COLI MBIA RITE R .Ravnanger, a -Norwegian steamship, 2004 tons, has been taken on a six months' time charter for lumber, op tion three ports. It is reported that she will load on the Columbia river' for Halifax. Charter Calls for delivery and redelivery in the United States. The vessel is now en route from the Canadian, port to the Pacific side. Lumber trade in all directions is firmer, t is particularly heavy in the intercoastal trade. The big deliveries are now at New York. During the last month Halifax has. been taking some lumber. During the past year three steam ships of the Nielsen line were operated in Una lumber trade out of Portland, principally to the Orient. The time has run out and the steamships have been taken by Kerr, Gifford & Co., for grain loading for the L'nited Kingdom. Ex porters have a number of charters fixed for new crop loading, but are slow to give them out. On the board at the Merchants Exchange only the Northern Grain & Warehouse company and Kerr, Gifford show as having ton nage en route. The first full cargo to load will be the Koranton. a British steamship un der charter to Kerr, Gifford & Co. She will start loading about the middle of the month. FREIGHTS COXTIXTJE WEAK New York.
