Can't Expect a Solo to Beat a Bitter Rivalry Exists Between Semi-Pro Teams rptHE bis; attraction for Sunday In A. serai-pro baseball circles Is the NlcolaJ Door-Brotherhood of Railway Clerks tame on Columbia Park for the 1922 championship of the City league. The last two days have seen considerable squabbling over eligibility of players on the part of the Nicolai and Clerks managements and a bitter feeling; has developed. The feeling Came about because of the desire to keep the game free from "ringers" and develop a real champion of the City league. The Nicolai Door club will go Into the game Sunday with practically the same line-up as has been seen all seaaon The last men signed by Nicolai was over threo weeks ago. according to Manager Ben Feetham. On the other hand, according to Feetham, Railway Clerks are endea voring to use new players in spite of a "gentleman's . agreement between the two managers involved., The Railway Clerks' manager, Ted Richter, in giv ing his version of the squabble, main tains he is strictly within the league by-laws and signed men up last Wed nesday night. President Leon S.- Jackson of the City league spent several hours Thurs day endeavoring to reach a settlement with the two managers involved, but without success. President Jackson is sued the following statement just pre vious to his .. departure for Seattle Thursday night on a business -trip : "It is greatly to be regretted that such a matter should come up at the close of a successful season. Harmony toas been' maintained In the City league organization throughout the yfear main ly because of the "give and take" at titude of the various managers. Minor squabbles bave come up at odd times but each time the attitude of the man agers has been for fair play. As to the merits of this particular case. I cannot, at this time, go into detail. N I have my personal opinions on the subject but would not care to express them at this time particularly as the game Sunday involves the City league championship. The w4ole subject will be threshed out at a special meeting of the league managers this coming week, if it is not settled amicably by the warring fac tions before Sunday's contest." Speaking of il the peculiar features of the 1922 pennant races, a New Tork baseball man who does more than merely look at the games, says: "Wonder If some of these fellows want to win the pennant?" Money being the ruling Influence of most of the players, he points out that some of the players could make more money by barnstorming and playing winter baseball than by living on the glory of a world's series. ' He made direct reference to no club, but he pointed out that star players would have more in the long run with the share of a second place club in the world series money and a fat winter contract than they could get out of the winner's cut of the fall classic. ;. He. pointed out that it might never enter the heads of the players to throw games, but they might play carelessly and without sufficient fight if they felt that they didn't care whether they won or not. ' The club owners In refusing to re peal the anti-barnstorming rule and in declaring each fall that they made no money out of a short world series, mhrht influence some nlavers in be lieving they were doing no wrong if they didn't fight their 'heads off for the pennant. .
