Bank of Commerce
Opns Business in
Fireproof Building
Oregon CJty.'July The new build
ing of the Bankof Commerce, one of
the finest structures in Clackamas
county, was formally opened Thursday
and the entire structure was thrown
open to the public for inspectibn. ; The
building, -which -embraces the most
modern of, banking-, and, office accom
modations, has been under construction
for more than a year, the original
plans being completed in February of
1921. - The occupation of the new struc
ture marka- a signal point In the de
velopment of the . Sank of 1 Commerce,
which opened for - business -on:; Decem
ber 16, 1915. :At that time, and until
its move into- the new building, at Sev
enth and Main streets,-it bad quarters
in the Hogg- building- at Eighth and
Main streets, across from the court
house. At the time of its organisation
the bank's capital was $50,000. It has
been increased since to $100,000 and
the paid-in surplus, originally $5000;
has grown through cash augmentation

The building will give the bank one
of the best . equipped homes of any
financial institution in the state. Com
modious quarters for - the bank have
been provided on the lower floor and
adequate room for- the convenience of
its patrons is allowed. The main bank
ing room, entered through a vestibule,
is finished in marble. ' The cages are
conveniently f arranged in rectangular
form about the center of the mam
room. On the north side of the build
ing are two large vaults, one In - the
rear. for. the use of ths bank and the
other containing , safety deposit . vaults
of latest construction. .The : banking
Quarters include a memaine- floor,
which will ultimately provide additional
space for the' bookkeeping staff. Two
special rooms for th'e directors ; and
the officers of the bank have been pro
vided, in addition to two coupon rooms
for the use of customers Is connection

side residence districts, it was stated.
One of the transfers affected by Hit
ter, Lowe ft Co. last week was the sale
of the property at , No. 134 Haselfern
street, Laurelhurst, from W. H. XHuui
to A. S. Babbidge for a consideration
of J7500. The property consisted of a
five room bungalow and a 60 by 100
foot site. Babbidgee formerly oper
ated steamboats on the Columbia river

000 'was spent in building operations
in Salem during the first six months of
1922, -according :. to records in the of
fice of the city recorder. A total of
119 new 4 residences , have ; been con
structed during this period st an ag
gregate cost of $324,220. : Building ac
tivities for. this year have more than
doubled the record established during
the same ' period r of 1921. - On , the
larger projects a total of $154,500 has
been spent including the plant of the
Capital Ice ft Cold Storage company,
costing $15,000 ; an addition to the
plant of the Kings' Products company
at a cost of $25.000 ; two new public
garages costing approximately - $7500
each and the plant of the Starr Fruit
company costing $75,000.

has a large 'and growing membership
and the building was financed by the
sale of bonds.

the First- Methodists of this - city and
is . to be handsome structure, the
most costly church edifice in Corvallis.
