WEDNESDAY, JUNE - 21, 1922; HIE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORTLAND, OREGON. VERDICT GIVEN IN COOS COUNTY FEE Eugene, June Zi. Kx-Governor Os wald West -won hi suit a&ainst Coos county here late yesterday afternoon, the Jury quickly returning a- verdict for the amount asked. Coos county attor neys stated that the case will be ap pealed to the supreme court. If the appeal falls.; West will be able to col. lect from .Xouglas county a large sum, in addition 'to what he will receive from Coos county. The' amount sued for was $19,681, 4 per .cent on $490,000 tax and .timber sale i -money on the Southern Oregon 'land grant, refunded to Coos county by the government in 1919. and represents West's fee for lobbying at the natmnal capital to secure the pas sage of the refunding bill. West claims that he had an oral contract with County Judge Watson of -wa county to gu to Washington in tns Interests of the bill and that this agreement was ratified by the county court. An agreement. West claims, be tween the Coos and Douglas county courts fixed his compensation t 4 per cent of the amount received from the federal government. Judge Watson and Commissioner Phillips of Coos county were afterwards recalled on account (it their agreement with West. The case was tried here before Judge H. H. Belt of Dallas. Coos county was represented by Goem, Kendal & Mur phy, and Ben S. Fisher, district attor ney of that county. West was repre sented by Dey, Hampson & Nelson of Portland. Piha sold boxes in which the top' layers of , berries were good but those underneath were spoiled. Large Share of Cherry Crop Is Sold to Packer The Dalles. June 2 r. Approximately two-thirds of the. Wasco county cherry crop to be marketed through the Ore gon Growers Cooperative association pool this year will be sold direct to the Libby. McNeil & Libby- company plant, according to announcement made Tuesday by C. R. Thompson, local manager for the .growers. The cannery here as contracted for the cherries at 8 X-5 cents a pound and Thompson said he did not believe that the cooperatives would ship more than five carloads of.Koyal Anns this year. The shipment of Royal Anns from The Dalles was attempted for the first time last year oh a large scale' and the re sults were not as good as they were expected to be. Practically all of the black cherries, the Bings and the Lamberts, will be shipped as usual, practiclly all the local production has been contracted for at good prices, prices f from 8 1-5 to 10 cents a pound "betas paid. Picking conditions so far have been excellent and the fruit is ripening so rapidly that difficulty in obtaining enough workers Is being experienced.
