Adults' Can Do, v and Should, Ia Argued. Portland, March . To the Editor of The Journal. In the past two weeks the citizens of Portland have had bought home to them the need as well as the results of organized fire drill in the pub tic schools. First we had the Holladay school fire,' where 600 or more little chil dren were attending. I visited the build ing last Saturday and in going over the building it struck ma as very remark able that a building Af that size and construction could be emptied of all the pupils and teachers in the remark able time of 45 seconds, but the fact remains they did and it was all due to the fire drill, the work of our excel lent fire marshal as well as the teachers. I wonder how many fathers and moth ers have been to eee the effects of the fire and to sense the possibilities of death that stared the youngsters in the face as they marched from that burning building.- Let them go up to the top floor and view the debris as it lies on the floor, in some places three and four feet deep, and see the roof of the building as it hangs down in the audi torium, and they will realize just how near those little folks were to almost certain death. And they will also realize the value, of organized fire drilL Following - close upon the Holladay fire came a fire at the Seilwood school. which was likewise emptied of even more pupil In about the same time, Now if small children can be taught to keep their heads, and to obey a fire signal, whether it be real or only a drill (which they don't know), it seems to me we ' grown-up folks could be taught the same. The Old Testament has a great deal to say about fools, and Christ quotes the Diety as caUIne a man a fool who was a millionaire here but a bankrupt In eternity. The great teacher sometime used language startling and terrible. He treated the common every day sinner with the greatest tenderness and pity, but for the upholstered scribes and Pharaaees, covered all over with the mildew of fraud, hynocrisv and de ceit, he had nothing but a divine thun derbolt. For there ia no remedy for hy pocrisy out a thunderbolt. Today we are only plavlne at relhrion ana naraiy playing in earnest. The achievement of the kingdom of heaven was tne core and center of the revolu uonary teaching-of Jesus, but the pulpit or ioaay nas almost completely aban aoned this, its appointed task. There is more religion in the Declaration of In dependence than in all the creeds of Christendom. There is more religion in many of The Journal's editorials than In most of the pulpit sermons. The church and the nreachers instead of controlling material civilisation are controlled by it. - Twenty-eight years ago a committee, of which I was chair man, was appointed by the Dreachers association of Portland to investigate and report the ownership of the property m town usea ior immorality and com' mercial vice. It was shown from the public records ajid by the.aid of the po- uii "i os i or una property was owned- by religious people who controlled and financed the churches. When the report, with the names, was read to the preachers meeting one witness said it was like calling the roll of the churches. One, who said he would roast out of his church any member owning sucn property, sat tight and did nothinsr. Anouier saia we were "monkeying with the buzzsaw." Only one church took action. One pastor who made the report the subject of a sermon and called thines by their right names was told the failure or pew rents would now make his resig-1 nation aesiraDie, and it promptly fol-i lowed. Mr. Himes, the historian, eager for data, has this report now filed in the archives of the Oregon Historical so ciety. That the report is not antiquated was shown a few years asro when a business man. In an address to the Port land Y. M. C. A., said that 95 per cent of the property used for commercial' vice in the city was owned by religious neo- ple. The suggestion of Mr. Hargreaves that I be a candidate for a professorship of profanity in a dlvinits school when the preachers are licensed to chew to bacco and swear is Quite , Interesting. This is an insult to the Amer ican Legion. They deserve and should have the bonus and it should nave been paid to them long ago, but . to raise it in the : way suggested by some of our congressmen is a violation of constitu tional law, and an effort to thwart the Will of the people. However. I believe with Mr. Taylor that the senate and house committees are competent to find ways to finance the bonus without re sorting to crime. The only thing lacking is a will to do it. However, if they are so incompetent that they cannot find a better way than to place a tax on .wines and beer, they should immediately con sult with E. A. Linscott of Pe Ell. To the Editor of The Journal- I am a foreigner in this country and have always heard that the controlling elements are freedom and justice for all ; so perhaps you might understand my great horror when read ing about the boy, Harvey Church, who was to be hanged at Chicago, being treated in such a barbarous manner by the officials whose duty it is to uphold the law of freedom and justice. The law found this boy guilty of murder; accordingly it found him having to for feit his life in payment. . But is there anywhere a law passed' whereby he can be tortured to such an extent that even the nations you call heathen and savage would not permit such a thing? It is a disgrace to your boasted civilization and every man and woman in the United States who does not rebel at such an action is remiss. There should be such an outcry at this miscarriage of justice that those officials who permitted it or were In any way connected with it, should be dismissed at once. How can a nation- which calls itself Christian and pretends to follow the teachings of Christ, who commanded that you "love one another," allow such ani action? Your boys fought for freedom ' and the brotherhood of man, to free mankind from tryranny, but I doubt if such an action had ever been allowed in those countries.
