W. Hopp against the county commissioners is in the hands of the printer, according; to Joseph Hall, county attorney, and the case will be submitted to the supreme court in a short time without argument. The orig inal act permitting collection of tolls on the bridge provided for payment of cost of operation and interest charges and the sum remaining was to go into a sink ing fund for retirement of the bonds. The legislature of 1919 amended the act permitting the use of the surplus on the county roads up to June 1, 1921. During the 1921 session of the legislature Sena tor McCoy introduced a bill- extending the time but it was vetoed by Governor Hart on the ground that it amended the wrong paragraph. Judge Simpson ruled that when the amendment expired the original act remained In force and the county commissioners must use the Bur plus for a sinking fund to retire the bonds. do. do. do. By Phltaa Hanna (Special Correspondent of The Jon mall Detroit, Feb. 17. Manufacturing activity In this section is increasing by leaps and bounds, alany institutions which closed 1021 with lean results and which laid out only the most con servative schedules for the present year have been obliged to revue tneir plans toward in creased production. The bet evidence of this increased activity liea in the reports of the Emr-loyers' association. These reports show a steady increase in employment since Janaary 1. t or the current week the increase reported was 5000, bringing the to'al to approximately 177. OOO men. This is within 2000 of the highest level reported during the entire year of 1921. The Paige-Detroit Motor Car company, which ha1 scheduled 18,000 cars for the first six months of this year, has been forced to increase this allotment twice. The- upward trend of tba employment curve is plainly shown by the hv ereased industrial power load recorded at the plants of tbe Detroit Edison company, which furnishes power to many factories. Bail road reports show large gains in traffic doting February. Tbe Michigan Central, wbirb handled an average of 2300 freight ears a day n January, now ia nanaiing aouo cars a day, and other roads report similar increases.
